Infant or Baby Constipation Home Remedies

Baby Constipation
Babies or infants have their own pattern of bowel movements depending upon their foods, activity and digestion abilities. However, if your child gets constipation, you get to know it if s/he does not have a bowel movement in 3 or more days or has hard, dry stools that are difficult to pass. Treatment for baby constipation can be done by using certain home remedies. Here is a list of such constipation remedies for providing relief to your baby.
  • If your baby has just started taking solid  baby food, it might be a cause of constipation as these foods are low in fiber. Request your doctor to change the baby food brand that might help in constipation treatment of your baby.  With consultation of doctor, switch from rice cereal to barley or oat cereal, or you might add pureed fruits or vegetables to regular cereal.
  • If your baby crawls, motivate her to do a few laps and if she isn't crawling, try pumping her legs gently. This will give her some exercise.
  • Dehydration can be one of the causes for your baby's constipation. Increase the amount of fluid which will also keep her stools soft.
  • Give 1 ounce of prune juice diluted with equal amount of water, twice a day. Alternatively, give  apple juice to your baby.
  • Rub the area surrounding baby's anus with a considerably warm cloth. This helps in relaxing the muscles and allows gas and other matter to escape.
  • Mix a capful of corn syrup in your baby's food to get rid of constipation.
  • Soak 1 tsp Psyllium Husk or Isabgol in a cup of water. Feed 1-2 spoon of this liquid in the food that you give to your baby. This can even be used as a precautionary method for avoiding constipation in babies.
  • Avoid such foods as rice cereal and bananas as they may aggravate constipation. Instead give your baby prunes, apricots, or pears.
  • Soak 6-8 raisins (kishmish) in hot water (depending on the age). When crushed and given routinely even to little infants, it helps to regulate bowel movement (however care should be taken so as not to give too much otherwise the child will get loose motions.)
  • Rub the Vaseline on the baby's bottom. This not only will loosen up the area, but will also help the stool to come out. Be prepared for the stool to come!
  • Apply Castor oil/ Coconut oil to the Anus region of the Baby, so that it doesn't pain for the baby while passing motion and the hard motion easily slips out. Use a cotton bud to apply and don't use your finger else you may hurt the baby with your nail.
  • Ask your health care provider about the use of flax oil as a relief aid for constipation. Often, a teaspoon of flax oil added to formula may help treat constipation in baby.
  • A Warm Bath with Baking Soda
Directions:
Prepare bath as normal. Make sure to make the water warm but not hot. The baby will appreciate the semi warm bath. Add in a couple teaspoons of baking soda and mix fully before putting the baby inside the bath. Let the baby soak for up to ten minutes before taking them out. This can be repeated a couple times a week if necessary.

Child Health Care: Worm Infestation

If you are one of the concerned parents of a child suffering from worm infestation and you don't want to administer all sorts of strong medicines to them, you can well relieve yourself. Ayurveda has some easy remedies that will help your child getting rid of worms. Before knowing these simple ayurvedic treatments, its good to know what types of worms can harm your child's health and in what condition these worms occur so that you may avoid their repeated occurrence.

Common Types of Worms
If you examine your child's stool and see long white or pinkish tiny thread like shapes, your doubt was right- your child has got worm infestation. The common types of worms include:
  • Round worms (Ascaris): They are round, thin, white/pink worm about 10-20 inches long.
  • Pinworms (Thread worms): They are white, small and thin, just like fine threads.
  • Hookworms (Ankylostomes): They are tiny dark-pink in color, not visible in stools.
  • Tape worms (Taniea saginata/solium): They are flat and extremely long about 2-3 meters.

There are many other types of worms that not only infest the children but also adults.

Causes for Worm Infestation

The main cause of worm infestation is malnutrition and bad hygiene
Any human being get infection through fecal-oral route. If defecation is done in open fields, the eggs of worms from stools of infected humans and animals find the soil and grow there. Children playing in such contaminated soil can easily be infested by worms.
  • Children who eat without washing their hands, transfer the harmful eggs, sticked to their nails, into their stomach where they become fully developed worms. These worms sticks to the lining of the intestines and suck blood leading to anemia and other symptoms of worm infestation. They can grow to the extent of obstructing intestines causing acute pain and landing the patient in an emergency seeking condition. Tiny thread worms come out of the anus in the night to lay eggs around, causing itching.
  • Some worms called cysticercoids reach the stomach by eating contaminated pork or beef. They are even more dangerous as they can mix into the blood and reach brain, heart, liver etc and prove fatal.
  • Unwashed hands and using others' towels, handkerchief etc. spread worm infestation.
  • Eating unwashed raw vegetables and drinking contaminated water are yet other causes of worm infestation.

Home Remedies for Child Cough and Cold

Whether your child has a cough, a cold, or the flu, you can try these gentle, effective, and safe home remedies. A cold or flu usually takes about ten days to run its course. While none of these home remedies will shorten your child's illness, they may help him feel a lot better.
  • Massage the child's chest with warm olive oil or warm ghee (add a pinch of salt for extra potency) for 1 to 2 minutes followed by a steam inhalation.
  • Turmeric powder mixed in warm milk. Dosage: A pinch to tsp. of turmeric (according to the child's age) mixed in one cup of warm milk.
  • Fresh Ginger juice with honey. Dosage: Half teaspoon of fresh ginger juice with one teaspoon of honey.
  • Regular dose of half a teaspoon of Chawayanprash
  • Lemon and honey mixed in warm water can be consumed twice a day. The high concentration of vitamin C improves the resistance of the body, lowers the toxic nature of the infection, and reduces the total duration of the cold.
  • Cloves of garlic, boiled in water and consumed as a soup, provide relief from the symptoms of a cold. The antiseptic and antispasmodic nature of garlic mitigates the discomfort. The oil contained in the garlic is also beneficial in opening up the airways, thus facilitating better respiration.
  • Ginger is also used as one of the home remedies for a cough and cold. Ginger tea, mixed with honey and drunk hot, provides soothing relief to the throat and clears the feeling of heavy headedness.
  • Natural cold remedies also include the use of turmeric. The anti-inflammatory properties of this root can help ease the symptoms of a cold and rejuvenate the infected person. It is best to consume a hot glass of turmeric and ginger mixed in milk, before retiring for the night.
  • To address a running nose a home remedy banks on the benefits of inhaling the vapors of turmeric, apple cider vinegar, or eucalyptus oil that can be added to steaming water water. This helps loosen the secretions, thus enhancing the discharge through your nose.
  • Saline gargles are helpful to soothe an itchy and sore throat. The use of humidifiers may also be helpful, particularly if you spend most of your time indoors.
  • 1 gram of dry Ginger powder, black pepper powder, cardamom powder, clove powder, cinnamon powder, turmeric powder. Add an equal quantity powdered sugar (i.e. 6 grams). Mix 1-4 grams of this mixture in honey or warm water. Dosage: Twice daily.

    Dos and don'ts
    • • Avoid cold and frozen foods, yogurt, banana and sour fruits
    • • Take fresh and homemade preparations, hot drinks
