Natural Ways to Fight Stubborn Fat With Ayurveda

In ayurveda, Charak Samhita describes eight different types of bodies that are disease prone. Out of these, the obese body is described as the one afflicted with the most diseases and troubles. To really fight that stubborn fat, the ancient medical system of India, known as ayurveda, uses age-old techniques that target the exercise-resistant fat by igniting your digestive fire. This is the biggest difference between ayurvedic weight loss and techniques and more conventional Western methods – ayurveda focuses on why your fat cells are getting bigger and gives you solutions that work long term. These techniques have worked for thousands of years and can be performed on a daily basis.

There is a special concept used in ayurvedic medicine known as ama that is key to losing weight. Ama means “toxins.” These toxins are an accumulation of impurities in our bodies that are the result of improper diet, chronic stress, and environmental pollutants. Some of these toxins are water-soluble, making them easier to remove from the body with diet and exercise. But other toxins are fat-soluble, meaning that they become stuck deep inside fat cells. The fat cells expand as they accumulate these toxins, which leads to weight gain, especially in those hard-to-remove pockets of fat around the stomach, hips and thighs.

Ayurvedic techniques are targeted specifically at removing ama from your body, which shrinks your fat cells.
The older you get, the more common it becomes to have ama in your body, but it doesn’t have to be this way. If you implement daily habits and detox programs that help remove these toxins, they don’t have to become a chronic issue leading to weight gain.

Each one of the following recommendations will help you to shed those extra kilos. Individually, they are helpful, but when you put them all together, you may experience impressive weight-loss results.

Ayurveda Tips for Morning Get up early morning at 5:00. After brushing your teeth follow this:

Drink 3 glasses of warm water. If this seems difficult, add a teaspoon honey to the glass of water and drink.

You can follow this with either of the following for better results In weight loss:
  • Drink lukewarm lemon water with honey
  • or have 2 tablets of Medohar Vati with warm water and honey
  • Cinnamon Detox
    Add cinnamon powder and fenugreek in water and boil and let it cool. Add this to a jar and drink whole day when you are thirsty.
  • Drink Ayurveda Detox Tea through out the day
    It includes a combination of ingredients that help to improve digestion, break down fat, and “unclog” the channels in our body by removing ama.

    Boil 4 to 5 cups of water in the morning.
    Add 1/2 teaspoon of the following seeds to the water and continue to let it boil for about 5 minutes with the lid on.
    Whole cumin seeds
    Whole coriander seeds
    Whole fennel seeds

    Strain out the seeds and pour the liquid into a thermos. The key is to make the tea fresh every morning, place it in a thermos, and take small sips of it throughout the day. It is best to drink it warm or hot. If the tea is too strong or if you experience some initial discomfort, reduce the amount of seeds to 1/4 teaspoon for 2 weeks, and then increase it back to 1/2 teaspoon.
After this empty your bladder and bowels to release toxics and waste from the body. Massage body with warm oil (pitta:coconut, vata:sesame, kapha: almond). After 30 mins take bath. For effective weight loss, power yoga must be practiced at least 3 times a week mainly for beginners. Each session of power yoga for weight loss is usually about 45 minutes long. For maximum benefit, power yoga practiced for about 90 minutes is encouraged for advanced pupils. - See more at:

As per Ayurveda, food is supposed to be consumed on fixed time. Our body is not made to eat anything at anytime. This time needs to be in accordance with the timing of JATHARAAGNI. Jatharaagni is at the highest for 2.5 hours after sunrise.

This is the time to have the biggest meal of the day. Whatever you crave for you should have this between 8-11 AM. All the heavy foods like stuffed parathaas, sweets etc should be had in the morning meal. What you like best you should eat in the morning. So that you can eat your fill. This will ensure you are mentally satisfied as well as physically. This is of extreme importance. If you are fulfilled with the food you are eating, the Pineal gland will be most active and you will stay healthier as well as happier.

Heavy Meal of the Day (8-11 AM)
Pick any options with Milk-200ml, Tea 20ml *(less sugar)

 Pick your options:

  1. Eat Wheat or Mung bean sprouts and a cup of skimmed milk.
  2. Brown Bread Sandwich with Paneer/Cucumber Onion Tomato
  3. Organic Brown Poha/Upma with lots of Vegetables
  4. Ramdev Dalia
  5. Onion Roti with Mint Chutney
  6. Suji Idli with Mint Chutney
  7. Wheat Cornflakes with Curd/Milk
  8. Besan/Moon Dal(Green) Chilla
  9. 2 Egg Whites with Vegetable
  10. Salad of raw vegetables such as carrot, beet, cucumber, cabbage, tomatoes with steamed or boiled vegetables, whole grain bread or whole wheat chapatis (Indian bread)

Mid Day Meal (1-3 PM)

 Pick your options:
A glass of orange, pineapple or carrot juice | Coconut water | Lemon Tea | A glass of buttermilk. Roasted cumin seeds, green coriander leaves, a little salt and some grated ginger mixed in the buttermilk | Fresh vegetable soup


  1. Boiled/Steamed Vegetables
  2. Vegetable Salads
  3. Dry Fruits (Almonds, Cashew, Walnuts)

IMP: Food ideally should be consumed only sitting on the floor in Sukhasana.

Must rest lying down on your left side after morning/noon meals. This is very important for Jatharaagni to work well since lying on left side activates the Pingala (soorya) naadi on the right side of the body and this in turn activates the Jatharaagni.

This rest should be between 20 to 40 minutes. It’s ok to take a nap if one feels sleepy.

In the Evening (4-5 PM)
Drink Ayurveda Detox Tea / Green Tea / Indian Masala Tea(Elaichi, cinnamon, cloves)


Wheat Biscuit(2)/Murmura/Bhel/Roasted Channa (25gm)
If you could avoid snacks it would be good.

Take a 30 minute brisk walk

Meditate before the sun sets. Take your dinner between 6:30-7:30 PM.

Last Meal of the Day / Dinner (6:30-7:30PM)
Dinner should be lightest. You should avoid all fried foods, sweets, proteins in the evening.

Eat Salad of raw vegetables such as carrot, beet, cucumber, cabbage, tomatoes with steamed or boiled vegetables followed by vegetable soup if required. You can also have bowl of papaya.

Ayurveda Tips for Night
  • Do not watch TV for a long time at night and avoid any kind of mental stress like fight or action during this time. Go to bed before 10 PM. Your sleeping time and the last meal must have the difference of at least 3 hours.
  • Never rest after dinner for at least 2 hours. This is because sun has set and hence the biochemistry etc is completely different now.
  • Sleeping soon after dinner will invite diseases like heart attack, diabetes, BP etc. 
In case you are unable to follow both these then sit in Vajra asana for atleast 10 minutes after meals. This is the only asana allowed after food according to yoga.

Avoid Wrong Combination of Foods
According to Ayurveda one should avoid ama -producing foods.
Ama is the product of incomplete digestion--it represents sticky toxic matter that can clog the channels of your body that carry nutrients to the cells and waste out of the body.

From the ayurvedic perspective, leftovers, and "dead" foods such as processed, packaged, canned and frozen foods all create ama because they are very hard for your body to digest.

Non-organic foods, genetically modified foods, foods grown with chemicals, pesticides and chemical fertilizers, and foods with chemical additives also introduce toxins into your body and are confusing for the natural "intelligence" of your digestive system and should therefore be avoided.

Avoid heavy dairy products such as aged hard cheese or yogurt, foods that are deep--fried or oily, raw foods of any kind, heavy desserts, and foods that contain refined sugar and honey as these are harder to digest and create ama. Avoid yeasted breads and dry breads such as crackers, and fermented foods.

Eat foods that are light, warm, cooked and easily digestible. Freshly made flat breads, freshly made light soups and dhals, organic vegetables cooked with spices, and freshly made grains such as quinoa are ideal. Mung bean soup pacifies all three doshas and is nutritious yet easy to digest.

Never eat opposite products together.

  • Doodh and dahi, any item made of these two should not be taken together.
  • Doodh and dahi and doodh and gud don’t go together.
  • Honey and ghee are poison if taken together. This can be taken together only when cow mutra is used to counter negative effect.
  • Gud and ghee go well together.
  • Kathal/Jackfruit never with milk.
  • Onion and milk are poison together. – max probs of skin will happen due to this combo.
  • All sour fruits don’t go with milk except amla. Even mango should be taken with milk only when it is completely ripe and sweet.
Important Things to take care to loose weight faster!
  • Drink detox tea throughout the day
  • Eat lots of fiber rich foods
  • Avoid intake of too much salt. 
  • Include spices like dry ginger, cinnamon, black pepper etc. in any form in your day as they are good for loosing weight.
  • Vegetables like bitter gourd (Karela), and bitter variety of drumstick are useful for loosing weight.
  • Honey is an excellent remedy for obesity. It mobilizes the extra deposited fat in the body and puts it into circulation, which is utilized as energy for normal functions. 
  • Fasting on honey and lime juice is highly beneficial
  • Cabbage is considered to be an effective remedy for loosing weight. This vegetable inhibits the conversion of sugar and other carbohydrates into fat. 
  • Measure the portions of your food every meal and make sure that the portions are small and always eat on right and fixed times.
  • You must include regular exercise of atleast 30-45 minutes in your daily routine to help enhance weight reduction.
  • You can have ayurvedic supplements to aid better digestion and thus faster weight reduction. You can have 2 triphala guguul tablets by Ramdev after meals.
Herbs/Choorna That Helps in Weight Loss
  1. Triphala is an ancient ayurvedic herb that is composed of three dried Indian superfruits that work synergistically together: Amalaki, haritaki and bibhitaki.

    Curry Powder BlendIn a coffee grinder, grind the following ingredients together:
    5 tsp coriander seeds
    1 tsp fenugreek seeds
    1 large bay leaf
    1/2 tsp cumin seeds
    1/2 tsp mustard seeds
    1 small (1 1/2 inch) cinnamon stick
    5 cloves
    After you grind the above ingredients together, add:
    2 tsp turmeric powder

Ayurveda Cellulite Busting Therapy - Udvartana

The word Udvartana is largely used for the most famous body treatment in Ayurveda to lose weight. However if we refer to the classics of Ayurveda we have different types of Udvartana mentioned, which are classified according to their action on the body and the result the Ayurveda physician would like to achieve.

Also there is a large misbelief that Udvartana is only used as a treatment to lose weight, whereas Sushruta (Father of Ayurvedic Surgery), divides the Ayurvedic powder massages into three parts: Utsadana, Udgharshana and Udvartana.

Udgharshana - This is a treatment where only powders which are dry and rough in nature are rubbed all over the body to induce the same qualities and remove the excess water and earth element (KAPHA). It is mostly used in obesity and diabetic cases.

Udvartana - Udvartana according to Sushrata is a body toning program, with application of a combination of prescribed herbal powder and oil on the entire body .It is used in the treatment to reduce fat and strengthen the body, at the same time taking care that the body does not become too rough and dry in the whole process.

So as you see according to Sushruta - Udvartana and Utsadana are the same treatments where herbal pastes made of different oils and powders is applied to achieve a specific result.

Where as Charaka (Father of Ayurvedic Medicine) gives only the term Udvartana for all the above. Thus as we see above, Udvartana can be used to lose weight, improve skin complexion, de-stress and relax and as a natural full body exfoliation treatment.

Points to Remember during the Therapy
  1. As compared to Abhyangam (Ayurvedic full body massage - explained in a previous article), this treatment will require more pressure and speed; 
  2. Apply oil in between if the paste gets dry, as it may lead to a mild itching sensation during the rubbing movements; 
  3. Remember to move your body with your strokes. Appropriate body position and movement will also ensure that you do not build up pain in your body while giving this treatment; 
  4. During the long strokes, keep your legs wide apart, as it enables better and more uniform movement and pressure, which will also enable you to use your body weight and not the arm pressure.
  • Reduced cellulite/ subcutaneous fat tissue; 
  • When taken as a part of a treatment program including a strict Ayurvedic diet plan, regular exercise or Yoga and appropriate internal Ayurvedic herbal medication as prescribed by the Ayurveda physician, it helps to reduce weight and gives a well toned body; 
  • Beautiful skin complexion; 
  • Cleanses and revitalizes the skin and removes body odour;

Based on the consultation, the Ayurveda physician chooses the appropriate combination of herbs and oils. This combination, especially chosen for the individual (depending on his/her body constitution, climate and ailment etc.) would yield the specific result that one is looking for.
Contraindications: Udvartana should not be offered in: Dry skin conditions; In pregnancy; To the emaciated ; Children; After body detoxification and purification procedure of Panchakarma.

How to do Fasting to Loose Weight

Fasting is the act of purposely refraining from consuming any solid food for an extended period of time. Benefits to fasting for a prolonged time include reduced risk of heart disease, diabetes, slowed aging process, extended life span, and most importantly rapid weight loss. But before you decide to do fasting it is very important to understand the fasting process.

Prepare yourself.You should never start a fast immediately. It's important to prepare yourself physically and mentally before beginning a long or short term fast.

Begin eating smaller meals prior to your fast. This will prep your body for lower caloric intake and slow your appetite. Cut your normal food portions in half. Try skipping or limiting some meals. It's much easier and healthier to go without dinner than it is any other meal. Limit the amount of food you take in before bedtime and never eat any food within four hours prior to you going to sleep.

Cut down on caffeine, salt, sugar, cooked/fried food and meats very slowly. If you stop too suddenly, you should expect some discomfort. It's important to eat strictly no meats or fried fatty foods. Prefer to eat things that are fresh rather than cooked food, i.e. salads and fruits. Fruits of any kind, i.e. fruits, berries, nuts, natural cereal are of highest quality in their vibration. Select organic fruits and vegetables that have been grown in natural sunlight and that have completely ripened in the Sun.

Drink a lot of water. This is very important in preparation of a fast. Water helps keep you full and reduces your appetite.

Right way of Fasting
Nothing but water should be taken when you are fasting. The intake of water must be two to two and a half litres. One feels fresh if one continues drinking water and the intake of water also helps the expulsion of morbid matter from the body.

One day's fasting should be followed by a food intake 25% less than one normally takes. A two day's fast should be followed by ingestion of fruits only the next day; normal food should follow the next day. A three days fast  should be followed the next day by fruit juices and soup of vegetables. (the soup must be clear, without addition of any thickening agents or condiments.) On the fifth day eat fruits only and on the sixth day breakfast on fruits, lunch on bread and boiled vegetables and repeat a fruit diet for your dinner. It is only after wards that you resume your normal diet.

With fasting you should do five to six miles walk in the morning and two to three miles in the evening. Deep breaths should be taken during a walk. Inhalation and exhalation should both be done slowly.

Last but not the least, Sleep should be sufficient to give a sense of relief from exhaustion. The ideal time for sleep is from nine o' clock in the night to five in the morning. Afternoon sleep should be avoided. You can just relax for an hour after lunch.

Hip Bath & How You Should Take to Reduce Excessive Fat on Belly

Hip Bath Tubs
There are specially made tubs for hip baths. The tub is oval in shape and one end of it is raised so that the patient can rest his back against it. This is  the ideal tub for taking a hip bath.

Fill the tub with cold water. The level of the water should be so adjusted that it touches your navel when you sit in it. Your feet will be outside the tub and you can support them by keeping a low stool in front of the tub. You can rest your back against the raised position of the tub.

Now take a rough towel and rub your abdomen from right to left. Do it gently so that the skin is not scrapped. Do not apply too much pressure in rubbing.

A hip bath can be taken from 10-20 minutes. Thin persons should take it for only 10 minutes and the stout ones can continue for 20 minutes. During winter the duration of the hip bath should be reduced by about 25%.

In the beginning, the hip bath should be taken only for a minute or two. the time should be increased gradually to ten or twenty minutes.

If it is too cold, rub your body with your palms for five to seven minutes before getting into the tub. Wipe your body with a towel when you get out of the tub, dress quickly and go for  walk or take some other exercise.. Those who feel difficult to engage in any such activity should get into bed and wrap a blanket around them and rest for half an hour to bring back warmth to their body.

Ayurvedic Weight Loss Remedies After Pregnancy

We are advised by our mothers and grandmothers to eat twice the amount during pregnancy: we know that this is an absolute myth but still we follow it!  And then it is obvious that we would look for remedies that would help us to bring the weight within the prescribed limit soon after pregnancy.

A healthy diet is the best way to lose your pregnancy kilos. Consult your doctor as to what foods are important for the continuing health of you and your baby. Focus on nutrition, rather than weight-loss diets! If you’re breastfeeding, your baby’s nutritional needs most certainly outweigh your need for a slim body. Include lean meats, fresh fruits and vegetables, nuts, whole grains and lots of water. Keep healthy snacks handy such as raisins, popcorn, wheat crackers, and nuts. Refuse to buy store-bought baked goods or junk food. Always avoid processed foods and sugar as much as possible. Eat well!
Eating a healthy diet is step one to get back your pre-baby body. With a new baby and schedule, as a new mother it can be hard to find the time to eat. But skipping meals won’t help you lose weight. Many moms find that eating five to six small meals a day with healthy snacks in between (rather than three larger meals) fits their appetite and schedule better. A small meal might be half a sandwich, some carrot sticks, fruit, and a glass of milk.

Just eat fennel seeds for increasing your metabolism and burning additional fat. After pregnancy, it is natural to feel stressed and worn out. Fennels seeds may also improve your energy levels.

Honey too is capable of bringing noticeable changes in the mother’s body. For example if honey and luke warm water are consumed in the morning, in an empty stomach, it boosts the metabolic rate. Additionally it also increases the mobility of the cells of fat because of which fat is burnt, we feel more energetic and ready to start for the day.

Shatavari is used for making medicines for infertility. The name itself is synonymous with fertility –it means wife of hundred! It has also effects that boost the immune system of the mother’s body in the initial months. It improves lactation and hence the baby gets the required supply of milk and with more breastfeeding you can burn fat cells more. Apart from this its roots are a rich source of Folic acid, vitamin, zinc and calcium.

Ayurvedic massage for weight loss after pregnancy
Apart from using these above mentioned remedies Ayurvedic massage is also highly effective in weight loss after pregnancy. For postpartum treament in Shathayu Ayurveda toning massage is applied to the new mothers with Patrapinda sweda, medicated steam, warm oil and medicines.

Other special post pregnancy massage is for Abhyangam and it means giving whole body massage for 45 minutes with special herbal oil. After that, a special herbal bath is given with the warm water, roots of Bala and bark of Nalpamara. It helps a lot in losing weight and bringing the body back in shape.
