Ayurveda Perspective on Controlling Diabetes on World Diabetes Day

Healing Food for Diabetes
Healing Food for Diabetes
In order to regulate diabetes, one has to ensure proper diet and lifestyle decisions which help in balancing your blood sugar and decrease the risk of complications. Ayurveda suggests a healthy diet & lifestyle with simple home remedies.

AYURVEDIC VIEW
Ayurveda does not regard Diabetes as a disease that can be treated by mere medicine or by a dietary regimen. Madhumeha is classified as a Maha Rog (Major Disease) because, if not treated in time, it can lead to several complications in the body, including eye problems, joint pains, impotency, kidney failure, sexual and urological problems, and more. Diabetes is a metabolic disorder and it cannot be merely treated by controlling sugar levels. The treatment recommended in Ayurveda – as against modern medicine – is aimed at rejuvenating the body to not only balance sugar levels, but also ensuring that no further complication is caused.

In order to regulate diabetes, ensuring a balance between regular exercise and healthy diet is key.
  • A diabetic patient should never skip meals. Proper meals on time is a must.
  • Start doing some light exercise, such as brisk walking. Build up to a brisk walk of 30-40 minutes in the morning and again in the evening.
  • Avoid sleeping in the daytime as it increases Kledaka Kapha.
  • Practice Yoga and Meditation to calm mind and body.

Ayurveda Recommendation on Diet & Lifestyle
  • Raw salads should be taken along with afternoon meals and also for dinner.
  • Include whole grains in the diet, such as jowar, barley, bajra, ragi, quinoa.
  • Cheese and yogurt prepared with skimmed (nonfat) milk may be taken.
  • Sprouted horse gram, green gram, black gram, green peas, etc., should be consumed more.
  • Use garlic, onion, bitter gourd, spinach, raw banana, and black plum.
  • Make a flour mixture of 1 part barley, 1 part black chickpeas, and 4 parts whole-wheat flour and use this to form pancakes and bread.
  • Avoid sweet fruits like pineapple, grapes, mangoes, etc. Fruits including berries and apples, vegetables like spinach, cauliflower, cabbage, carrot, etc. can be taken.
  • Avoid sweet, sour, and salty foods, potatoes, sweet potatoes, colocasia (taro), yams, fresh grains and pulses (legumes), whole yogurt (high in fat), and heavy, oily and spicy foods.
  • Drinking hot ginger tea with meals helps stimulate slow digestion. Drink 2–3 cups of ginger tea daily.
  • Use pungent spices like pepper, cayenne, mustard seed, and ginger freely in your diet.
  • Include these medicinal herbs and spices in your daily diet like Fenugreek Seeds, Cinnamon, Turmeric
  • Tender coconut water can be taken and the whitish pulp should be avoided as it is high in sugar and fat. Taking coconut water directly improves blood circulation and helps to widen the vessels for smooth blood circulation. Therefore, coconut water provides great relief against fighting the symptoms and side effects of diabetes. It suppresses the appetite and also increases metabolism. Hence it is an ideal drink for obese diabetic patients. Only pure and unflavoured (fresh) coconut water should be taken.

Home Remedies
  1. Dry the leaves of mango tree and grind to a powder. Mix 1 teaspoon dry powder in a glass of water and drink it daily to reduce high blood sugar levels.
  2. Take 2 teaspoons of bitter gourd (karela) juice once a day. One can also increase its use as a cooked vegetable.
  3. Take 1 teaspoon of Indian gooseberry (amla) juice mixed with 1 teaspoon of bitter gourd juice twice a day.
  4. Consumption of Jamun seeds (dried and powdered) has proved to beneficial in case of type 2 diabetes. Dried and powdered seeds should be taken in the dose of 1 tsp twice daily with warm water.
  5. Neem leaves should be ground and made into a paste and a small bolus of this should be added to water. This should be taken on empty stomach in the morning.
  6. Add 1 tsp of cinnamon powder to a glass of hot water and drink it daily for a couple of months.
  7. Mix ground flax seeds to a glass of water and drink daily.

Yoga for Body-Centered Awareness and Balance
From an Ayurvedic perspective, there are specific yoga postures that offer the greatest benefits with the least amount of stress. Some of these poses include:
  • Sun Salutation series
  • Seated forward bend (paschimottanasana)
  • Tree pose (vrksasana)
  • Warrior I and II (virabhadrasana I and II)
  • Extended side angle, (utthita parsvakonasana)
  • Bridge pose (setu bandha sarvangasana)
  • Alligator twist (jathara parivartasana)

How to Make a Coconut Oil Sugar Scrub

Homemade Coconut Oil Sugar Scrub
Homemade Coconut Oil Scrub
A coconut oil sugar scrub is an excellent way to exfoliate and moisturize the skin, remove makeup, eliminate wrinkles and prevent oxidative stress on the face, leaving you feeling and looking younger than ever before.

The gentle properties of sugar granules and the healthy benefits of coconut oil combine to form a wonderful tonic for the face and other parts of the body that may be experiencing inflammation, irritation, dryness or high levels of acidity.

How Do You Make A Coconut Oil Sugar Scrub?

You can make a coconut oil sugar scrub with 1/4 cup of granulated sugar and 1/2 cup of softened coconut oil; simply blend the two together at room temperature to form a gritty paste, which you can then apply anywhere on your skin.

Some people choose to use larger amount of sugar, as this can give the scrub a more coarse feel, and thus help with exfoliation a bit more, in addition to the moisturizing and cleansing power of the coconut oil.

Additionally, you can spice up your coconut oil sugar scrub with other ingredients, such as essential oils or citrus zest. You can add the citrus zest from a grapefruit, lemon, orange or lime to add

You should use carefully controlled amounts of essential oils, such as orange or lemon, as they can be far more potent than the other base ingredients. No more than 1/2 teaspoon of essential oils should be used, which will be plenty in terms of their pleasant aroma and the concentrated health benefits they can deliver.

A coconut oil scrub like this can last for more than a year, although the more extra ingredients you add, such as citrus zest, the shorter the shelf life will be. Also, if you use citrus essential oils in the mixture, it is not suggested to use on the face, as the essential oils can be very irritating to the eyes.

How Do You Use A Coconut Oil Sugar Scrub?

Using a coconut oil sugar scrub for your face consists of gently massaging the scrub into your face in slow circular motions. The coconut oil should dissolve within 30 seconds to 1 minute, leaving your face feeling a bit grainy, but also stimulated and rosy in the cheeks. You can then rinse the area and pat the skin dry, which will allow any excess oil to continue soaking into the skin.

For your hands or feet, massage the coconut oil scrub firmly into the skin, particularly the fingertips, between your toes and any other areas that may fee dry or are commonly neglected by your lotion regimen. The effects are quite quick, and you can typically rinse off the mixture within a minute or two without compromising the benefits.

Prebiotics vs. Probiotics

Probiotics are live bacteria in yogurt, other dairy products and pills.
And while probiotics have been shown effective in managing certain gastrointestinal conditions, they do not have the same power that prebiotics do.

First, they’re delicate — heat and stomach acid can kill them, rendering them ineffective before they've even been digested. Also, those who don’t eat dairy foods for taste or dietary reasons may find ingesting adequate amounts of probiotics difficult, if not impossible.

If this is a probiotic then what is a prebiotic?
In short, the Prebiotic is a specialized plant fiber that beneficially nourishes the good bacteria already in the large bowel or colon. The body itself does not digest these plant fibers; instead, the fibers act as a fertilizer to promote the growth of many of the good bacteria in the gut. These, in turn, provide many digestive and general health benefits.

PREBIOTIC VS PROBIOTIC
Prebiotics and probiotics both accomplish important health tasks for the human gut. Trying to decide between a probiotic and prebiotic supplement regimen? Consider these prebiotics vs probiotics facts:

PREBIOTICS
are a special form of dietary fiber PROBIOTICS are live bacteria in yogurt, dairy products and pills. There are hundreds of probiotic species available. Which of the hundreds of available probiotics is best for the average healthy person is still unknown.

PREBIOTIC powders are not affected by heat, cold, acid or time. PROBIOTIC bacteria must be kept alive. They may be killed by heat, stomach acid or simply die with time.

PREBIOTICS provide a wide range of health benefits to the otherwise healthy person. Most of these have been medically proven. PROBIOTICS are still not clearly known to provide health benefits to the otherwise healthy. Some are suspected but still not proven.

PREBIOTICS nourish the good bacteria that everyone already has in their gut. PROBIOTICS must compete with the over 1000 bacteria species already in the gut.

PREBIOTICS may be helpful for several chronic digestive disorders or inflammatory bowel disease. Certain PROBIOTIC species have been shown to be helpful for childhood diarrhea, irritable bowel disease and for recurrence of certain bowel infections such as C. difficile.

Chicory Root has the highest percentage of Prebiotic Fiber per gram

Live probiotic bacteria are easy to find and consume if dairy products are to your taste and meet your dietary needs. Yogurt, for example, contains probiotics; but where can you find prebiotic fiber? It’s easy if you know where to look.

Prebiotic fiber is found in many fruits and vegetables, such as the skin of apples, bananas, onions and garlic, Jerusalem artichoke, chicory root and beans. Most people should consume at least 25 grams of fiber every day, and the foods highest in prebiotic fiber — chicory root is one such example — are nearly impossible to eat in large quantities every day. The good news is that adding a prebiotic fiber supplement to your diet is fast and simple. In supplement form, prebiotic fiber is also mild in texture and nearly tasteless, making it easy to add to water, cereal or any other food.

How Prebiotics Help
For years, hardly anyone in the medical profession paid any attention to the role the colon plays in overall health. Over the past 15 years, however, we have discovered that the colon — and specifically, the bacteria that call the colon home — is incredibly important to wellness. The healthy bacteria that live there strengthen the bowel wall, improve mineral absorption and aid in the regulation of hormone production, which has a range of essential benefits. Prebiotics fertilize these good bacteria as they stifle production of the bad, disease-causing bacteria, and prebiotic fiber is independently shown to cause the multiplication of beneficial bacteria which combat gut dysbiosis.

Probiotics are live bacteria in yogurt, other dairy products and pills. And while probiotics have been shown effective in managing certain gastrointestinal conditions, they do not have the same power that prebiotics do.
