Wheat Grass Benefits

Wheatgrass is a kind of grass. Wheatgrass is primarily used as a concentrated source of nutrients. It contains vitamin A, vitamin C, and vitamin E, iron, calcium, magnesium, and amino acids.

Wheatgrass juice is a popular health drink. It is thought to benefit health only when fresh and taken on an empty stomach immediately after extraction.

Wheat Grass Benefits
  • Stimulates the thyroid gland, correcting obesity.
  • Is a powerful detoxifier, and liver and blood protector.
  • Improves Hemoglobin level
  • Increases red blood-cell count and lowers blood pressure.
  • Externally applied to the skin can help eliminate itching almost immediately.
  • Contains beneficial enzymes. Whether you have a cut finger you want to heal or you desire to lose five pounds…enzymes must do the actual work. The life and abilities of the enzymes found naturally in our bodies can be extended if we help them from the outside by adding exogenous enzymes, like the ones found in wheatgrass juice. Don’t cook it. We can only get the benefits of the many enzymes found in grass by eating it uncooked. Cooking destroys 100 percent of the enzymes in food.
  • Will soothe sunburned skin and act as a disinfectant. Rubbed into the scalp before a shampoo, it will help mend damaged hair and alleviate itchy, scaly, scalp conditions.
  • Works as a sleep aide. Merely place a tray of living wheatgrass near the head of your bed. It will enhance the oxygen in the air and generate healthful negative ions to help you sleep more soundly.
  • Sweetens the breath and firms up and tightens gums. Just gargle with the juice.
  • Turns gray hair to its natural color again and greatly increases energy levels when consumed daily.
  • Is a beauty treatment that slows down the aging process when the juice is consumed. Wheatgrass will cleanse your blood and help rejuvenate aging cells, slowing the aging process way down, making you feel more alive right away. It will help tighten loose and sagging skin.
How does it work?
Wheatgrass contains chemicals that might have antioxidant and anti-inflammatory (swelling) activity, which is why some people think it might be helpful for ulcerative colitis. It also contains a chemical that seems to kill bacterial infections.

Indigestion: Digestive Disorder as Per Ayurveda

The fundamental digestive disorder is indigestion or dyspepsia which may give rise to more acute or serious diseases. The basic cause of indigestion, besides weak digestive powers, is overeating or eating foods which must be avoided. Stools of such persons contain large amounts of undigested matter. They suffer from flatulence arising from putrifying matter in the stomach or the intestines. Breaking wind or belching may provide temporary relief, but there is generally a feeling of fullness amounting to heaviness, loss of appetite and general discomfort. Sometimes hyperacidity may cause a burning sensation and even sudden escape of gas from the mouth or coming up of the undigested matter from the stomach. Overburdening of the stomach, the root cause of indigestion, has to be avoided in order to start the treatment.

Treatment for Indigestion

  • Do fasting for 24 hours and then take to easily digestible food.
  • Fats and condiments must be avoided
  • Bland food, mostly vegetables should be consumed either boiled or steamed.

Understanding Digestive Disorders as per Ayurveda

According to Ayurveda consumption of food which is inextricably linked with digestion and its subsequent functioning or malfunctioning, the cause of improper functioning of the digestive system lies in the improper eating habits. Improper or imbalanced indulgence of senses which gives way to wrong eating habits serves to upset the all important digestive structure. Unhealthy eating manners triggered by the wrong use of senses aid to upset the physiological balance.

'Vata', 'Pitta', and 'Kapha' the natural substances included in human physiology are terribly disturbed on account of digestive disorders; the cause of which lies in the indulgent use of senses. Consumption of uncooked food items, oily stuffs and those enriched with moisture serve to bring about imbalance in the composition of air, bile and phlegm. While raw and uncooked food serves to upset 'vata'; oily and rich food upsets 'pitta' or bile. On the other hand, consumption of cold and moisture based food items puts phlegm or 'kaphya' into imbalance.

Ayurveda upholds the essential link between metabolism and digestion. According to it 'Jatharagni' an essential digestive fire plays significant role in digestion and assimilation by way of its direct participation in catabolism which serves to break down food particles in order to bring about digestion. 'Samanya Vayu' an important constituent of 'vata' or air also facilitates digestion by making for the absorption of nutrients. It seeks to relate 'jatharagni' and 'samanya vayu'; with both being directly proportional to one another. If the former facilitates the breaking down of food particles; then only the latter will make for the absorption of the vital nutrients.

Besides the above mentioned digestive facilitators; the other facilitators include 'Apana vayu', 'Kledak kaphya'and 'Pachyak pitta'. 'Pacyak pitta' is an essential ingredient of the digestive fire which aids in the breaking down of food particles. The second component of 'Apana vayu' controls the passage of undigested elements in forms of toxins and fecal wastes. Kledak kaphya refers to the mucous lining of the organs included in the digestive system. An excessive secretion of this protective mucus is also one of the symptoms of digestive disorders. The other symptoms include bloating, excessive formation of gas, constipation, loose motion and presence of foul smelling breathe. Burning sensation, vomiting and burping also feature amongst the various symptoms of digestive disorders. 'Ama dosha' involving the excretion of sticky mucus is also one of the important symptoms of digestive disorder.

Direct study of the patients' lifestyle in addition to the examination of the manifesting symptoms helps the Ayurved to diagnose the nature and pathogenesis of the digestive disorders. In keeping with the nature and pathogeneses of the digestive disorder; the line of treatment is decided. The treatment administered to overcome the symptoms of digestive disorders; includes both symptomatic and asymptomatic treatment seeking to eradicate the underlying cause. Asymptomatic treatment aims at the rectification of lifestyle and eating related defects. The chief culprit pertaining to faulty eating habits and those pertaining to general hygiene are generally addressed by an Ayurvedic health provider while treating various facets of digestive disorders. In modern times, Ayurveda which is still influential recommends the use of capsules based on herbal contents as remedial measures for digestive ailments.

Ayurveda offers treatment aims at the rectification of lifestyle and eating related defects  as well as herbal products and medicines for the following digestive disorders. However, if you have some chronic disorder and need a customized treatment plan for your problem, you should consult a qualified doctor for consultation.

Culinary Herbs and Spices for Healthier Digestive System

By James Bailey, L.Ac., M.P.H.Eating and digestion are daily, life-sustaining events. It's no wonder, then, that a healthy digestive system is revered in Ayurveda as a cornerstone of well-being and that every disease is believed to arise from inefficient digestion. The fiery metabolic energy of digestion, known as agni, allows us to assimilate food while ridding the body of wastes and toxins (ama). It transforms dense physical matter into the subtler forms of energy the body needs to be vital, generate internal warmth, and produce a clear mind.

There are many types of agni in the body. Within the digestive system, agni determines the production of hydrochloric acid in the stomach (where it's known as jathar agni), bile acids in the liver (bhuta agni), and sugar-digesting pancreatic enzymes (kloma agni). It also regulates the thyroid gland (jatru agni) and the metabolic transformations of the tissues (dhatu agni). Special agnis are even found in each cell. The metabolic pathway of agni begins with digestion and ends in the cells.

This might sound complex. But simply put, when agni is weak, there is not enough digestive power to metabolize food into energy. On a subtler level, indriya agni, known as the door of perception, helps digest and transform external information into knowledge. Thus, a stronger agni allows for a clearer and more vital body and mind.

You want a balanced agni that is neither too weak nor too excessive. The quality of agni varies depending upon one's dosha: vata, pitta, or kapha. In vata and kapha types, agni tends to be weak and the digestive system "cold," sluggish, or irregular, which can result in malabsorption disorders, chronic constipation, loose stools, and gas. In pittas, the fires of agni can become excessive and cause heartburn, acid reflux, colitis, and other burning sensations.

An easy way to support digestive agni is through the daily use of culinary herbs and spices, used to increase agni before and during meals. I have learned not to distinguish between the culinary and medicinal uses of herbs and spices. In ayurvedic cooking, it is believed that within them lies the medicine of optimal health and long life, aiding digestion and ensuring that more energy and fewer toxins are taken into the body.

A simple ayurvedic practice is to consume a small piece of fresh ginger with a few drops of lemon juice prior to eating a meal. This slowly and gradually awakens the flames of agni, preparing it to digest the main course. In addition to ginger, other aromatic spices that assist digestion include black, long, and cayenne pepper; cardamom; and licorice. They are believed to make foods more digestible by "predigesting" the food during cooking—heat combines and awakens their aromatic qualities, making the nutrients easier to digest once eaten. These spices also stimulate the secretion of saliva and digestive enzymes in the stomach and intestines, and the less work agni needs to do while digesting food, the less fatigue one will experience after eating.

Cooking herbs and spices also serve to prevent gas and ama. Undigested food is broken down by fermentation rather than digestion, and fermentation is what produces gas. The intestines can then absorb these gases, which causes the colon to become toxic and spastic. Fennel is an herb commonly consumed in Indian restaurants as a carminative after meals to prevent gas, discomfort, and fatigue. At home, chew on a teaspoon of fennel seeds, then spit out the pulp after swallowing the juice.

Hing is also used in ayurvedic cooking to remedy weak digestion. A resinous sap from the root of the asafetida plant, this spice is a potent digestive aid capable of removing impactions in the gastrointestinal tract. In the classic ayurvedic preparation hingavashtak, hing is mixed with other aromatic and carminative herbs and spices to promote deeper assimilation of nutrients. Their drying, warming, and stimulating actions awaken agni and tone the digestive system.

The Benefits of Ayurveda Oils & Daily Massage

Traditional Ayurveda medicine practice is based on ancient Hindu philosophy and is centered on the idea of creating a long & fulfilling life, meaning the principles are to encourage vitality, health and longevity. The actual practice is largely based on prevention, rather than cure. At the core of prevention is the every day custom of personal healthcare – a type of regular health maintenance. Fundamental to this is daily self massage, known as abhyanga. Massage with Ayurvedic oils can relieve your mind and body from many kinds of stresses and toxic build ups. Regular self massage rejuvenates your entire physical structure and promotes mental relaxation. Ancient Indian texts written 5000 years ago state that ‘a person with a view to preserving and promoting positive health should use massage therapy every day’.

Daily self massage with Ayurveda oils is a positive way of unlocking the body’s innate healing ability, revitalising the body and mind & empowers you to maintain your body’s optimum health.

The benefits of self-massage (abhyanga)
  • Balance the endocrine system
  • Calm the nervous system
  • Rejuvenate the skin
  • Tone muscles
  • Eliminate impurities
  • Lubricate the joints
  • Increase mental alertness
  • Promote youthfulness
  • Stimulate internal organs
  • Longevity

Ayurvedic massage has become a lifestyle for the people of India . It is a natural form of exercise that offers a balance between the mind and the body. It is believed in the Ayurveda system that each human being is composed of a Dosha. According to doctrines, a dosha is a combination of the 5 different elements; ether, wind, fire, water and earth. Doshas, according to Ayurveda, need to remain balanced in a person. An imbalance will manifest a negative or undesirable condition. Using Ayurvedic oils in massage is a potent contributor at maintaining harmony & balance. Due to the extremely small size of the oil molecule, Ayurveda oils penetrate the skin easily and transport the healing properties of nature, directly to the cells in the body.

The best time for massage
Ayurvedic massage is traditionally performed in the morning, before your bath or shower, to facilitate the release of toxins that may have accumulated during the previous night. However, at the end of the day a mini massage before your shower and bed or simply massaging the soles of your feet with Ksheerabala oil will certainly help those with insomnia and promote restful sleep. So make sure that you participate in this type of Ayurvedic healing as often as you can, so you can enjoy all the benefits, everyday.

How to do Fasting to Loose Weight

Fasting is the act of purposely refraining from consuming any solid food for an extended period of time. Benefits to fasting for a prolonged time include reduced risk of heart disease, diabetes, slowed aging process, extended life span, and most importantly rapid weight loss. But before you decide to do fasting it is very important to understand the fasting process.

Prepare yourself. You should never start a fast immediately. It's important to prepare yourself physically and mentally before beginning a long or short term fast.

Begin eating smaller meals prior to your fast. This will prep your body for lower caloric intake and slow your appetite. Cut your normal food portions in half. Try skipping or limiting some meals. It's much easier and healthier to go without dinner than it is any other meal. Limit the amount of food you take in before bedtime and never eat any food within four hours prior to you going to sleep.

Cut down on caffeine, salt, sugar, cooked/fried food and meats very slowly. If you stop too suddenly, you should expect some discomfort. It's important to eat strictly no meats or fried fatty foods. Prefer to eat things that are fresh rather than cooked food, i.e. salads and fruits. Fruits of any kind, i.e. fruits, berries, nuts, natural cereal are of highest quality in their vibration. Select organic fruits and vegetables that have been grown in natural sunlight and that have completely ripened in the Sun.

Drink a lot of water. This is very important in preparation of a fast. Water helps keep you full and reduces your appetite.

Right way of Fasting
Nothing but water should be taken when you are fasting. The intake of water must be two to two and a half litres. One feels fresh if one continues drinking water and the intake of water also helps the expulsion of morbid matter from the body.

One day's fasting should be followed by a food intake 25% less than one normally takes. A two day's fast should be followed by ingestion of fruits only the next day; normal food should follow the next day. A three days fast  should be followed the next day by fruit juices and soup of vegetables. (the soup must be clear, without addition of any thickening agents or condiments.) On the fifth day eat fruits only and on the sixth day breakfast on fruits, lunch on bread and boiled vegetables and repeat a fruit diet for your dinner. It is only after wards that you resume your normal diet.

With fasting you should do five to six miles walk in the morning and two to three miles in the evening. Deep breaths should be taken during a walk. Inhalation and exhalation should both be done slowly.

Last but not the least, Sleep should be sufficient to give a sense of relief from exhaustion. The ideal time for sleep is from nine o' clock in the night to five in the morning. Afternoon sleep should be avoided. You can just relax for an hour after lunch.

What is the Right Way to Take a Bath

A bath is a daily ritual, but its very important to understand its purpose or importance. Merely throwing water over our heads and bodies is not what a bath is.

There is a dual purpose for taking bath: cleanliness and reactivation of the circulation of the blood. The cleanliness of the body is served by hot water. The skin of the body has millions of pores through which our skin breathes. If the pores are clogged, the lungs are overworked. Overwork may lead to fatigue or exhaustion of the lungs. And then, closed pores do not pass any perspiration which is a must to clear the blood.

Cold water is also a cleansing agent, but it cannot deal with the grease and dirt infesting the pores of the skin. Hot water mixed with lemon juice is the best cleansing agent for the skin. Rubbing body with lemon cleanses the skin and no soap is required.

A hot bath before retiring for the night is the best for health. It helps you to sleep better. If you are suffering from a cold, take a hot bath, cover yourself with woolens and get into bed. It will drive away the cold. A really hot bath when you are tired acts as a tonic; it drives away fatigue.

A bath, hot or cold, should be taken one hour before meals or three hours after it. A bath with hot water has its uses, but a daily bath should be with cold water. Hot bath is recommended once or twice a week. Bath with cold water makes the skin cool and body in its natural phenomena rushes the blood to warm it up. The circulation of the blood is activated and the blood is also cleansed of many impurities.

The best way to start a bath is to rub the whole of your body with your palms. Start with your scalp, forehead, face and the neck. Then go on to your wrists and then to the shoulders through the arms. Afterwards rub your chest, the armpits and abdomen and the back. The feet should be the last to receive attention.

After the vigorous rubbing, take a cold bath. Wipe your body with a towel. Start with the head and then dry up the whole body. If this method of taking a bath is adopted, there will not be any danger of any skin eruptions or itch. The face will be free of pimples & other blemishes. The skin will acquire a healthy glow. If the palms after a bath instead of a towel, it will be doubly beneficial. It gives a pleasant sensation during winter.

Lower High Cholesterol Naturally with Herbs and Home Remedies

There are some wonderful herbs and natural herbal supplements which can be used for lowering the cholesterol naturally.

Some of the best herbs for high cholesterol are:

Artichoke Plant – The leaves of the artichoke contain a special type of fiber that will help to block the absorption of cholesterol in your body, and it helps to decrease the production of the nasty LDL cholesterol particles. You can stop your body from creating and absorbing the harmful lipoproteins, but it is not recommended to take this herb if you have problems with your gall bladder.

Celery – Celery is a vegetable that has its place in just about every dish that you can make, but the leaves and stalk both have a very specific effect on cholesterol. You can seriously lower your LDL cholesterol by eating lots of celery, so fill your lunch box with celery sticks instead of potato chips if you want to deal with your cholesterol effectively.

Skullcap – Skullcap is a unique plant that has been used for a number of herbal remedies, but a Japanese study showed that the plant can help to increase your body’s natural production of the beneficial HDL cholesterol. This means that taking skullcap will help your body to more naturally get rid of the cholesterol on its own.

Soy – Japanese love all things soy, and this is one of the main reasons that they have one of the lowest cholesterol levels in the world. The FDA has stated that nearly any food containing soy products can help to decrease cholesterol, but it is food like tofu and soy protein that will be the most effective at helping you to control your cholesterol levels.

Turmeric – Those who like a bit of Indian or Arabian cooking will know exactly what turmeric is, but this orange root is more than just a good taste in your meal. The root can actually help to decrease the cholesterol levels in your body, thus helping to decrease the risk of serious heart problems. Eating more chicken curry is a great idea, thanks to the health benefits of this amazing herb.

Ginger – Ginger is an herb that is used in many an Asian dish to add a bit of flavor and tang, but it will help to cut back on your cholesterol levels as well as make your food taste great. You can take ginger tea to help fight sore throats and control cholesterol, or you can add it to your food to obtain the same cholesterol lowering effects.

In addition to all the cholesterol lowering herbs, there are a number of cholesterol lowering supplements that you can take as well.

If you are looking for ways of lowering cholesterol naturally, these herbs may be exactly what you need. They are all made with natural ingredients, thus sparing you many of the side effects of medication. There will be no side effects, but you might be surprised to find that there are many great supplements that can help you to deal with your high cholesterol levels:

Niacin – Niacin is a B-vitamin (B3) that is given as a supplement to deal with cholesterol, and it has proven to be one of the most effective. In fact, many doctors prescribe it along with medications, as the effects it has are more effective than most medications. What it does is increase the levels of the good cholesterol in your body, thus helping it to naturally fight the bad cholesterol on its own. There are a few negative side effects like pain, muscle breakdown, and a few others, so it is important that your use of the supplement is closely monitored by a doctor.

Soluble Fiber – Soluble fiber is one of the most important things that you can give your body, as it is one of the things that will help to win the “War on Cholesterol Terrorism”. What it does is absorb a good deal of the bile that turns into cholesterol, and it helps to send the bile out the digestive systems waste disposal rather than spread through the body. It acts like a sponge, and thus is one of the most effective cholesterol prevention options. You can usually find soluble fiber in most whole grains and vegetables, but taking it in supplement form will make it even more effective.

Plant Stanols – Plant stanols can usually be found in certain types of margarine, and this compound can help to cut down your cholesterol levels by as much as 10%. This doesn’t sound like much, but it can be very effective if combined with other supplements or medications. They are not usually used in the place of medications, however, but are simply an addition to the medications used. Herbal medicines have been around for millennia, as the ancient peoples of the world found that there were many plants, roots, and leaves that had amazing healing effects on the body. The herbal medicines below are all great cholesterol lowering herbs, and you may find that they can be very effective if taken in the right form:

Chicory Root –
Chicory root is often used to make a coffee-like brew, but the Chinese have used this root for years as a treatment for high cholesterol. The reason the herb works is that it helps to regulate the body’s natural metabolism of the cholesterol, thus stopping the high production of LDL cholesterol.

Fenugreek – Fenugreek is an herb that has been used for millennia as an aid to digestion, but it can help to cut back on the sugar in your blood and reduce the amount of cholesterol in your body.

Hawthorn Berry – Hawthorn berries help the stomach to work properly, and it will also have a positive effect on your spleen and liver. It will help to boost your body’s natural circulation, and will help to lower the levels of cholesterol in your body.

Holy Basil -- This herb may sound absolutely divine, but the effects are much more mundane. The herb is native to the Indian subcontinent and Suriname, and it is one of the natural herbal remedies that help to control cholesterol levels. It can also help to reduce your blood sugar, and will counteract stress.

Green tea--
it is one of the few drinks that doctors will recommend patients due to its incredibly high antioxidant content. The polyphenols (the antioxidants) in the green tea help to prevent the cholesterol from oxidizing (hardening into plaque) on the walls of your arteries, thus preventing atherosclerosis and heart problems. However, does green tea help to lower cholesterol levels? The answer is: yes, but not as much as you might like.

Cinnamon is one of the many natural remedies that have been used to treat cholesterol. Cinnamon, when taken in small amounts, can help to lower your triglycerides, LDL cholesterol, and even your blood sugar. It won’t do anything to increase your HDL cholesterol, but it will reduce the bad stuff and help to keep your cholesterol levels regulated.

Make sure to take the spice in moderation, as it is very strong and can have serious side effects if you take too much.

Cholesterol Lowering Herbs:
Garlic-  is one of the most unique of the herbs in the world, as it has many amazing properties. Garlic doesn’t only make your food taste absolutely divine, but it also helps to kill a lot of the fungi and bacteria in your body thanks to its production of allicin. Apple Cider Vinegar--contains a lot of pectin, and pectin is one of the many things that can help to lower cholesterol. The way apple cider vinegar works to lower your cholesterol is by filling your stomach with soluble fibers. As you can read above, soluble fiber helps to absorb all the cholesterol and prevents it from spreading around your body. When the fiber bonds with the cholesterol, your body sees it as something that needs to be eliminated rather than circulated around the body. Your digestive system then proceeds to send it out the waste chute, and your cholesterol is lowered effectively. Another amazing thing about this soluble fiber found in apple cider vinegar is that it helps you to feel more full, as the soluble fiber absorbs water and fills your stomach. This means you will be much less tempted to eat, and the reduced desire to eat decreases your chances of snacking or stuffing the wrong high cholesterol foods in your mouth.

Apple cider vinegar is also believed to help neutralize the cholesterol in your body, as it contains lots of amino acids that stimulate the body to naturally get rid of the LDL cholesterol on its own. Even just taking one tablespoon of this amazing vinegar a day is enough to help you control your cholesterol.

Flax Seed-- is another one of the amazing cholesterol lowering herbs, and you will find that the benefits are three fold: First, flax seed is rich with lignans. Lignans help to promote a healthy digestive tract, decrease blood cholesterol, and prevent heart problems. Second, flax seed has lots of fiber, which is one of the main nutrients that help to fight the production and absorption of cholesterol by your body. Third, flax seed contains lots of Omega 3 fatty acids, which is one of the best things you can take to help prevent cholesterol from building up on the walls of your arteries. It can help to cut down on the LDL cholesterol, increase HDL cholesterol, and lower your total cholesterol. These simple seeds pack a punch, and you may find that taking flax seed to lower cholesterol is the way to go.

Natural Home Remedies to Cure Gum Disease (Gingivitis)

"#Natural Healthcare Guide suggests some simple tips on how you can prevent and help cure gum disease by trying simple home remedies, natural herbs and a good healthy lifestyle habits to maintain a good oral health for yourself."

Gum disease
is a bacterial infection of the gum tissue, it is a serious condition that starts as gingivitis and can progress to periodontitis. According to the British Dental Health Foundation "19 out of 20 people suffer from gum disease (gingivitis) at some point in their life making it the most common disease in the world.

During a typical checkup your dentist or dental hygienist will remove the plaque and tartar from above and below the gumline of all your teeth. If you have some signs of gingivitis, your dentist may recommend that you return for future cleanings more often than twice a year. Your dentist may also recommend that you use a toothpaste or mouth rinse that is FDA-approved for fighting gingivitis.

The gum infection treatment for a gum ball, the patient is numbed and the gum boil is cleaned out and drained of pus. An antibiotic chip is placed in the remaining pocket and the patient is given a Tetracycline 500mg prescription to take for a week. This causes swelling and the opposing tooth starts biting down into the swollen gums. In most cases with Pericornitis, the patient is placed on Keflex 500 mg for three to seven days and the wisdom tooth is removed.

Prevent gum disease by flossing between your teeth each day to remove plaque from areas in your mouth that the toothbrush can't reach. To prevent gum disease, avoid smoking and using tobacco, limit sweets and sugary foods to meal times, and drink lots of water to keep yourself well-hydrated. Avoiding frequent intake of acidic black cola type soft drinks will also help to prevent gum disease.

Flossing removes food particles from between and around your teeth, including debris that has gotten wedged into the gum. You may not be able to see these particles, but flossing can expose and get rid of them, reducing gum inflammation and eventual infection. Use an eighteen-inch piece of dental floss, with the ends wrapped around each forefinger and grasped by the thumbs. Push it up and down between teeth, moving along the length of the floss for a clean section each time you clean another tooth.

Use a mouth rinse. An antimicrobial mouth rinse can provide extra help in controlling plaque. Listerine is a good choice.

Moreover treating gum disease with homemade remedies is possible, and can help to cure the various gum problems like gingivitis, periodontitis and several other problems that need to be taken seriously. The knowledge of these simple things will help you to maintain a good oral health for yourself. This will also facilitate in bringing awareness about the healthy gums and teeth and how one can use the easiest ways at home.

There are things you can try on your own to treat gum disease, but if symptoms escalate and you experience persistent bleeding gums, visit your dentist immediately. In the meantime, check out these ideas for improving the health of your gums.

Make a sea salt solution. Dissolve a small amount of sea salt in a cup of warm water. Swish a sip of the solution in your mouth for 30 seconds and spit it out. Repeat several times. Salt water will reduce swollen gums and draw infection out of any abscesses. Add this mouth rinse to your twice-daily brushing routine.
Apply tea bags. Steep a tea bag in boiling water, remove and allow it to cool until you can handle it comfortably. Hold the cooled tea bag on the affected area of your gums and keep it there for about five minutes. The tannic acid in the tea bag can work effectively to relieve gum infection.
Directly applying the tea bag to your gums is more effective than simply drinking the beverage. Plus, drinking too much tea has a dental downside: discolored, tea-stained teeth.

Rub some honey. Honey has natural antibacterial and antiseptic properties, so you can put it to work treating your infected gums. Once you brush your teeth, rub a small amount of honey on the problem area of your gums.

Given honey's high sugar content, you want to be careful you don't overapply it and do your best to put it on your gums only rather than on your teeth.

Drink cranberry juice. Cranberry juice can prevent bacteria from sticking to your teeth, so try drinking up to 4 ounces of the unsweetened juice daily.

Make a lemon paste. Make a paste from the juice of one lemon and some salt. Mix it well and apply to your teeth. Let it sit for a few minutes and gargle with warm water to rinse it off.

Lemons offer a win-win solution for treating gum disease. First, they're an anti-inflammatory, which makes them helpful in treating infected gums. Not only that, but lemons contain vitamin C, which can help your gums fight off infection.
Eat more C-rich foods. It's not just lemons that can help with gum disease, but other foods full of vitamin C such as oranges, grapes, kiwi mango, papaya and strawberry are good choices, too. Vitamin C is an antioxidant, and antioxidants are found to promote connective tissue growth and bone regeneration, which can be affected by various gum problems.

Increase your intake of vitamin D. Vitamin D has anti-inflammatory properties, so be sure you're getting enough of this vitamin when you're trying to heal swollen gums and prevent the condition from reoccurring. Older adults should particularly take note of this vitamin. According to the National Institutes of Health, higher blood levels of vitamin D seem to be linked to a reduced risk of gum disease in people age 50 and older.

Get your vitamin D fix by soaking up the sun at least 15 to 20 minutes twice a week and eating D-rich foods such as salmon, whole eggs and cod liver oil.

Brush with baking soda. Baking soda neutralizes the acids in your mouth thereby reducing the chances of tooth decay and gum disease, so it's more of a preventative measure than an actual treatment for gum disease. Add a small amount of baking soda to a bit of warm water and mix to form a paste. Use this paste to brush your teeth.

Give up tobacco. Tobacco decreases your ability to fight infection and delays healing. Tobacco users are more likely than nonsmokers to have serious gum disease that doesn't respond as well to treatment and that leads to tooth loss.

While these home remedies are quite safe if used correctly, it is best to speak with a doctor before trying any of them. You could also try a few herbal remedies to treat gum infections. These herbs include
  • Aloe Vera gel
  • Calendula tincture
  • Chamomile
  • Cinnamon oil
  • Clove oil
  • Echinacea
  • Garlic
  • Goldenseal
  • Hawthorn berry
  • Myrrh
  • Olive leaf extracts
  • Peppermint oil

There are also several ways in which gum infections can be prevented. You could reduce your risks suffering from gum problems by –
  1. Following a good dental care routine, which includes brushing your teeth twice a day, as well as using a mouthwash
  2. Flossing your teeth or using an interdental cleaner, to get rid of food particles and bacteria from between the teeth
  3. Scheduling regular appointments with the dentist and undergoing a professional cleanup at least once every 5 to 6 months.
  4. Quitting unhealthy practices like smoking
  5. Chewing your food thoroughly during mealtimes, in order to stimulate your gums
  6. Restricting your intake of foods that are high in sugar, which could include sodas, juices, sweets, chocolates, candies, cookies, cakes and so on.
  7. Increasing your intake of foods that are high in vitamins, minerals and nutrients such as calcium, folic acid and zinc.
  8. In case your gum infection does not go away in spite of using home and natural remedies, speak to your dentist right away.
