Gum disease

Directly applying the tea bag to your gums is more effective than simply drinking the beverage. Plus, drinking too much tea has a dental downside: discolored, tea-stained teeth.

Rub some honey. Honey has natural antibacterial and antiseptic properties, so you can put it to work treating your infected gums. Once you brush your teeth, rub a small amount of honey on the problem area of your gums.

Given honey's high sugar content, you want to be careful you don't overapply it and do your best to put it on your gums only rather than on your teeth.


Drink cranberry juice. Cranberry juice can prevent bacteria from sticking to your teeth, so try drinking up to 4 ounces of the unsweetened juice daily.

Make a lemon paste. Make a paste from the juice of one lemon and some salt. Mix it well and apply to your teeth. Let it sit for a few minutes and gargle with warm water to rinse it off.

Lemons offer a win-win solution for treating gum disease. First, they're an anti-inflammatory, which makes them helpful in treating infected gums. Not only that, but lemons contain vitamin C, which can help your gums fight off infection.
 
Eat more C-rich foods. It's not just lemons that can help with gum disease, but other foods full of vitamin C such as oranges, grapes, kiwi mango, papaya and strawberry are good choices, too. Vitamin C is an antioxidant, and antioxidants are found to promote connective tissue growth and bone regeneration, which can be affected by various gum problems.

Increase your intake of vitamin D. Vitamin D has anti-inflammatory properties, so be sure you're getting enough of this vitamin when you're trying to heal swollen gums and prevent the condition from reoccurring. Older adults should particularly take note of this vitamin. According to the National Institutes of Health, higher blood levels of vitamin D seem to be linked to a reduced risk of gum disease in people age 50 and older.

Get your vitamin D fix by soaking up the sun at least 15 to 20 minutes twice a week and eating D-rich foods such as salmon, whole eggs and cod liver oil.

Brush with baking soda. Baking soda neutralizes the acids in your mouth thereby reducing the chances of tooth decay and gum disease, so it's more of a preventative measure than an actual treatment for gum disease. Add a small amount of baking soda to a bit of warm water and mix to form a paste. Use this paste to brush your teeth.

Give up tobacco. Tobacco decreases your ability to fight infection and delays healing. Tobacco users are more likely than nonsmokers to have serious gum disease that doesn't respond as well to treatment and that leads to tooth loss.

While these home remedies are quite safe if used correctly, it is best to speak with a doctor before trying any of them. You could also try a few herbal remedies to treat gum infections. These herbs include

Some useful home remedies for Dry Skin

  • Mix equal quantities of glycerin and rose water. Store this
    excellent dry skin lotion in a clean bottle and apply it on dry facial
    skin or skin of hands and feet whenever required. It is best to be
    applied after having bath for those who suffer from excessive dry skin.
    Always shake the bottle before use as glycerin settles down at the
    bottom of bottle (Mix lemon juice to this mixture if you have a mixed
    type of skin having combination of oily and dry skin).
  • Mix equal quantities of petroleum jelly and glycerin and apply it on
    your dry skin of face and body and keep it overnight.
  • Mix equal quantities of petroleum jelly, vitamin E oil and glycerin.
    Apply for half an hour over face and body before taking shower.
  • Take plain water and glycerin in the ratio of 10:1 and apply it on
    your dry skin of hand and feet before going to the bed. This will give
    you soft skin in a few days.
  • For having a special hand wash soap, mix glycerin with your liquid
    soap and fill it in a bottle. Wash your hands with this soap to avoid
    dry skin on hand.
  • Take 1 tsp each of egg yolk, rose water, lime juice, olive oil and
    orange juice and mix them thoroughly. Apply this smooth home made dry
    skin lotion to your face in the morning and wash it off after 20
    minutes.
  • Make a face mask by mixing honey, egg, olive oil and rose water and
    use it as dry skin facial mask.
  • Get ayurvedic massage with herbal oil (made with vata balancing
    herbs). It is good to have daily body massage for people with dry skin
    but if that is not possible, take such massages at least once a week.
  • Lavender oil and sandalwood oil are also good for dry skin for their
    soothing and cool effects. A few drops of these oils can be used in
    bathing water.
  • Mix glycerin, castor oil and rose water with 1 tbsp of 'malai' or
    milk cream. Apply this mixture on face, neck and on hands before going
    to bed. Wash it off with water in morning. This keeps dry skin hydrated
    during the day.
  • Mix ground almonds, honey and malai (milk cream) and apply the
    mixture at least twice a week and keep it for half an hour.
  • Mix 1/4th cup yogurt, 1tsp honey and 1tbsp milk powder. Apply on face
    for 10 minutes and wash it off with cold water.

  • Conditioning your hair with henna, or mehendi is a very effective way to add strength to your hair. Prepare a conditioner with a cup of henna powder, the yolk of one egg and enough coconut milk to get a paste-like consistency. Apply this to your hair and leave it for about four hours.
  • Cut a red onion in half, add four cloves of garlic and two cinnamon sticks. Put everything in a pot and bring to a boil for 15 minutes. Rinse hair with this infusion for four days in a row.
  • Grapeseed oil is believed to enhance hair growth. Give your scalp a massage using this oil before bedtime.
  • Cut three aloe vera leaves and scrape off the gel. Mix the gel with honey, and apply it to the scalp. Let it work for 20 minutes and rinse.
  • When cooking potatoes do not throw away the water. Let it cool, and rinse your hair with it. This rinse accelerates hair growth.
  • 1 tablespoon of wheat germ, 1 tablespoon of brewer’s yeast, 1 tablespoon soy lecithin, 1 tablespoon honey, and one cup of yogurt. Combine all ingredients in the yogurt and eat it every day before breakfast. In one week you will see results; a hair full of strength and growing faster.
  • 1 egg, 1 trickle of olive oil, 2 tablespoons honey. Apply to the scalp with a vigorous massage. Cover the head with a towel for 30 minutes. Wash normally.
  • A daily rinse with rosemary water will make hair grow faster.
  • Grind some curry leaves and grated amla. Heat coconut oil in heavy based vessel, add the mixture into that oil.leave it for ten minutes and switch off the stove. filter it and apply regularly. It really works .
  • Hot oil massages improve the circulation of blood in the scalp and make your hair grow faster. Coconut oil should be applied to the hair for at least an hour so that it is absorbed properly and then washed off. Castor oil can also be used.

Cure for Skin Rashes and Itching

Common rashes are often called dermatitis, meaning inflammation of the skin; they involve changes in the color or texture of the skin including skin redness or inflammation. Common rashes are also known as skin lesions, Rubor and Erythema.

Skin reactions are more common today due to many new fabrics in use. Some of the body rashes affect the whole body (termed as a generalized), where as others appear on discrete areas of the skin. Skin rashes can be self limiting or require medications. Babies often develop skin rashes because of irritation from the coloring materials in these fabrics. Skin or the body rash is a common term that describes a group of special spots, an area of inflammation or altered color or texture of the skin. Skin rashes might be associated with various other symptoms such as itching, tingling, burning, pain, inflammation and sometimes, surprisingly with no discomfort at all. Belladonna remedy is useful for conditions with sudden onset that are hot, bright red, and throbbing. Rash may be accompanied by fever.

  • Oatmeal bath is preferred
  • Applying olive oil to the rash could provide some relief.

Simmer one ounce of the bark with one pint of water and leave for ten minutes. Strain and cool. Apply with a clean cloth and leave it on for about thirty minutes.

There are natural alternatives to cortisone cream treatment for rashes. For example Eczema is often treated with cortisone cream to combat the itching. There is, unfortunately, no known cure for Eczema, but natural medicines can help reduce the symptoms of Eczema without the harmful side effects associated with cortisones and other pharmaceutical medications.

Natural Skincare in Winters, Ayurvedic Skin Care Tips, Winter Skin Care

Winter is a wonderful time of the year - holidays, warm fires, crisp air, and for many, fresh fallen snow. But, the colder temperature and lower humidity affect the condition of your skin and hair. One of the most important things to do is to keep your skin gently stimulated and maintain a healthy circulation.

Keeping your skin in prime condition can be a challenge, especially in winter when not only are conditions more extreme, but your skin will be facing sudden changes in temperature. While most of us are aware that we should cleanse, tone and moisturise, Here are few additional tips that will give extra benefits to the skin. Natural skincare is the best way to take care of yourself this winter and there is nothing more natural than herbs and other home remedies prescribed by Ayurveda, we will talk about Ayurvedic skin care in winter only.

General Tips for Ayurvedic Skin Care in Winter
Ayurveda says, in winter season people suffer from increased “Vata” and therefore they experience dry flaky skin, chapped lips and dry, brittle hair. The foremost tip for natural skin care in winter is thus to keep Vata dosha balanced in order to prevent Vata-associated skin problems.
  • Never use hot water for bathing in winters. Always use warm water that feels gentle to skin. Too hot water can rob the skin off its natural oils leaving your skin dry and itchy.
  • Ayurveda prescribes a pre-bath oil massage known as Abhyanga Massage everyday in winter season. As it is to be done each day, you must do it yourself before having bath. For this ayurvedic massage, use such nourishing oils as coconut, almond, sesame, or some herbal oil meant for body massage, especially in winters. If possible, keep the oil on your body for at least half an hour before going to shower so that the same is absorbed completely by the skin.
  • Do not use harsh soaps in winters. If possible, use some non-soap herbal cleanser recipes suitable to your type of skin. These can be anything ranging from milk mixed with flour or gramflour mixed with cream or clarified butter (ghee) etc.
  • Pay special attention to your diet in winters because your body needs sufficient energy to fight off the cold and your skin needs natural moisturizing agents from within which is supplied by the food you eat. Include more soaked and blanched almonds, soaked walnuts, whole milk, fresh cheese such as paneer (cottage cheese), and ghee (clarified butter) in your daily diet. Also, drink a cup of warm milk without removing its cream before going to bed.
  • Although you do not feel the need to drink much water in winters but there is a constant loss of water from your body due to cold and dry air. So drink plenty of water in winters to keep your skin hydrated from within. Eat fruits and vegetables high in water content with your meals.
  • Brahmi, Shatavari, Amla and Ashwagandha are some of the Vata-pacifying herbs for skin care. They help in maintaining skin elasticity, moisture balance, texture and radiance. 
  • Triphala is another herbal formulation which is good for Vata skin as it combines nourishment with a gentle detoxifying effect that enhances skin clarity. 
  • Amla (Emblica Officinalis), Bhringaraj, Grit Kumari (Aloe vera), White Sandalwood, Red Sandalwood and Lajawanti (Mimosa) are some of the Pitta-pacifying herbs for skin. They work by drawing out excess heat and by supporting the skin's natural ability to withstand the the environmental harshness. They also keep skin clear and healthy by nourishing sensitive skin tissues without irritating them. Triphala, Manjistha and Neem (Azadirachta Indica ) are also helpful for Pitta skin as they purify and clarify the skin without depleting it of moisture.
  • Kapha skin is water or earth predominant and thus is oily and tends to attract dust and grime. Natural skin care for such skin type therefore are purifiers that detoxify and clarify, along with properties of being nourishing and rejuvenating to the skin. Neem, Manjistha (Indian Madder), Triphala, Tulsi (Basil herb) and Turmeric are some of the Kapha-balancing herbs for skin. 
  • The skin on your hands is thinner than in other areas of your body, and it needs extra protection and care. Make sure that after washing your hands you dry thoroughly and use a good hand cream. Wearing gloves outdoors will also protect them and keep your skin soft.
  • Sun protection is very important in the winter months, just as it is year-round. Many people forget to use sunscreen, but sun reflects off snow and ice, and you can actually get double the sun exposure.
  • Protect your lips with a good lip balm, and avoid licking your lips as much as possible, since that will cause your lips to crack and chap. If you get a bad case of chapped or cracked lips, use some Vaseline Intensive care before bed, and you should be good to go in the morning.
  • Shea butter is another excellent moisturizer. You can mix in a little jojoba or other oil that’s good for your skin plus some essential oils to make a very nice moisturizer. Many sources recommend unrefined shea butter as the most effective. Some find shea butter to be on the greasy side, but that’s true for many oils. Give homemade moisturizers a little leeway while you wait for your skin to absorb them.
  • Mash one avocado until smooth. Add in one teaspoon of olive oil. Mix, then spread over your face. Relax for 20 or so minutes before cleaning off, then moisturize as usual.

Homemade Cleansing Creams, Milks, Scrubs

1) Apricot Butter Cold Cream (For Dry Skin)
10 oz apricot kernel oil
2 oz cocoa butter
2 oz beeswax
Heat all in top of double boiler until wax and butter are melted. Beat with a wooden spoon until smooth and cooled. Transfer to jars, cap and refrigerate.

2) Buttermilk and Fennel Cleansing Milk (For Oily Skin)
1/2 cup buttermilk
2 Tbsp crushed fennel seeds
Heat the milk and fennel seeds in top of double boiler for 30 minutes. Turn off heat, let steep for 2 hours. Strain, cool, pour into bottle and refrigerate. Keeps for 2 weeks.

3) Chamomile Cleansing Milk (For Dry and Sensitive Skin)
1/4 cup cream
1/4 cup milk
2 Tbsp chamomile flowers, fresh or dried
Simmer ingredients in top of a double boiler for about 30 minutes, do not allow milk to boil. Turn off heat and let sit for about 2 hours, strain. Keep refrigerated. Apply with cotton balls to the face. Variations: Use elderflowers, sweet violets or lime blossoms in place of chamomile

4) Cornmeal Cleanser (for Oily Skin)
Castile soap
1 Tsp Cornmeal
Wet face. Pour a little castile soap into the palm of your hand, add cornmeal. Mix meal and soap into a lather, wash face, being careful to avoid the delicate skin around the eyes.

5) Honey Cleanser (For Dry Skin)
Castile soap
1 Tsp Honey
Wet face. Pour a little castile soap into the palm of your hand, add honey. Mix honey and soap into a lather, wash face.

6) Honey Almond Scrub
2 Tbsp almonds
2 tsp milk
1/2 tsp flour
1/2 tsp honey
Grind almonds in a blender. Add milk, flour and honey, mixing until a thick paste is formed. Rub into skin, rinse with warm water followed by the pH balancer.

7) Honey 'n Oats Scrub
1/2 cup uncooked oatmeal
1 Tbsp honey
1 Tbsp cider vinegar
1 tsp ground almonds
Moisten face with a warm washcloth then apply mixture to face avoiding the sensitive area around the eyes. Let mixture dry, then remove with a warm, damp washcloth.

8) Lemon Cleansing Cream (For Oily Skin)
1 Tbsp beeswax
1 1/2 Tbsp Unpetroleum Jelly (available in natural foods stores)
3 Tbsp jojoba oil
1 Tbsp witch hazel
1 Tbsp strained lemon juice
1/8 tsp borax
6 drops essential oil of lemon
Melt beeswax and unpetroleum jelly over low heat. Add warmed jojoba oil to wax and jelly mixture, blending for 3-5 minutes. Mix witch hazel and lemon juice, warm gently, mix in borax until dissolved. Slowly add this to the wax mixture, beating until cool and creamy. After completely cooled, add lemon oil, spoon into clean jar.

9) Milk and Honey Cleanser:
Mix 1 tsp warm honey with 1 tablespoon milk or cream. This recipe should be prepared fresh each time.

10) Peppermint Patty Scrub: (For Oily Skin)
2 cup rolled oats
1 cup almonds
2 tsp dried lavender
2 tsp dried peppermint
2 cup white cosmetic clay
Grind oats, almonds and herbs to a very fine powder in blender or with a mortar and pestle. Mix ground herbs with clay, store in covered container. To use: mix 1 heaping tsp of mixture with water to make a paste. Massage into skin then rinse well with warm water.

11) Sesame Oil Cleanser: (For Dry Skin)
Apply sesame oil to face and neck. Remove oil and makeup with a washcloth that has been soaked in hot water and wrung out. Finish with a rinse of the pH Balancer.

12) Sweet Butter Cleansing Cream: (For Dry Skin)
Whip sweet, unsalted butter, transfer to container with a tid lid. May be stored at room temperature away from heat sources or refrigerate.


Cleansing Grains


1) Almond Cleanser
Grind almonds to a fine powder in a blender. Wet face then rub on almond powder. Rinse. Store powder in a tighly sealed container.

2) Orange & Oats Scrubbing Grains
1 cup dried orange peel
1 cup cooked oatmeal
1 cup almonds
Place peels, oats, and almonds in food processor, blend until mixture is a fine powder. Place some in the palm of your hand and moisten with a few drops of warm water. Rub paste onto face with a gentle circular motion. Rinse with warm water.

Oily Skin:7 Restoratives for a Happier Face


It's not your fault, really. If you've got to blame someone, blame your ancestors. Heredity does play a big part in oily skin, but so do hormones. Stress can also cause the oil glands to kick into overdrive. The wrong cosmetics can easily aggravate an otherwise mild case of oily skin.

There are no magic cure for the oily skin. Keep it clean all the time. Out tips will help you do that as well as it can be done. The advantages of oily skin is it tends to age better and wrinkle less than dry or normal skin. Today's curse; tomorrow's blessing.

Mud PacksClay masks or mud masks are worthwhile but these are temporary effect wont last for a long time. Generallyoil it can absorb. White or rose colored clays, though are gentler and work best on sensitive skin.

Mask can cleanse the skin of surface greasiness, but dont expect them to deep clean the pores.

Splash on the hot waterHot water is a good solvent. For that reason oily skin be washed in very warm water, with plenty of soap. Hot water plus soap will dissolve skin oil better than cold water and soap.

Seek out drying soapsDegrease the skin and that has to be done repeatedly, with astringents and with drying soaps. Try specialized degreasing soaps such as Cuticura Mildly medicated soap, clearsil soap and Neutrogena Oily Skin Formula, to name few.

Follow with good astringents.
Astringents with acetone are your best bet. Acetone is a great fat and grease solvent, and most astringents have a bit of acetone in them. If you use regularly, you can surely remove oil from the skin.
