Haritaki is a super fruit from the Terminalia chebula tree.
Haritaki (Terminalia chebula) is deeply revered in Ayurveda, and this respect is reflected in its many names—it is “the life giving,” “the animating,” “the unfailing,” “the restorative,” and “fearless against ill health." It is even called “the divine fruit” and “the medicine that rejects all diseases.” It is one of the “three Ingredients” of triphala, the most popular formula in Ayurveda. Beyond haritaki invaluable role in triphala, it is well worth our time to learn a little more about this particular divine herb! Haritaki herb really is one for all, bringing balance to all doshas, helping to cleanse the system, maintain regularity, and nourish and rejuvenate all the tissues—and so much more.

In Ayurveda, Haritaki is the name of the dried fruit of the Terminalia Chebula tree. It is also known as Harad, Kadukkai, Karakkaya, Kadukka Podi and Chebulic Myrobalan in various languages across the region.

Haritaki is particularly famed for its ability to help pacify any vata imbalance. While haritaki is so well known for its affinity for vata, haritaki is actually tridoshic, meaning that it can help bring balance to all three doshas. Furthermore, haritaki reputedly increases prana, the super-fine essence of vata. Prana is the force that is present in every cell, in the subtle body, in the mind, and connected to our souls. Haritaki manages to be both cleansing and rejuvenating, which makes haritaki so effective herb.
  • Haritaki support healthy digestion, particularly for those who tend toward vata-type digestive imbalances, such as gas, bloating, variable appetite, and a wavering agni, or digestive fire. 
  • Haritaki is also good for vata-type elimination imbalances.
  • Haritaki contains five of the six tastes, all but salty. Thanks to the sweet, bitter, and astringent tastes, haritaki can help pacify excess pitta; with the presence of the astringent, bitter, and pungent tastes, it helps remove excess kapha; and with the sweet and sour tastes, it helps with excess vata. 
  • It powers the body and keeps the mind supple and adaptable. It bestows creativity, enthusiasm, and strength.

And, as if that wasn’t enough, thanks to its effect in the deepest tissue layer, shukra dhatu (the reproductive tissue layer), it helps to enhance immunity.
  • Haritaki has a “scraping” action in the body, supporting the body in gentle cleansing and detoxification, which ultimately keeps systems running smoothly and can even help with maintaining healthy weight levels.
Caution:
  • Avoid during Pregnancy and Breastfeeding
  • While this herbs  ability to lower high blood sugar levels is generally seen as beneficial for those at risk of diabetes and metabolic syndrome, it may not be appropriate for diabetic patients on glucose lowering medication.
  • Taking too much powdered Chebulic Myrobalan fruit may cause temporary diarrhea and other digestive problems like bloating and excessive gas.
  • Ayurvedic medicine specifically warns that Haritaki is not recommended for those suffering from exhaustion; after fasting; when underweight or recovering from illness; for women who have just experienced heavy menstruation; and for those who have indulged too heavily in alcohol or sexual activity.
Haritaki Tea

The starting dose of Haritaki powder would be a quarter to half a teaspoon mixed into a cup of very hot but not boiling water (turn off the kettle or pan just before it boils).

Allow the liquid to cool and take this Haritaki tea around one and a half to two hours after you finish your evening meal and before bed.

It is best to take Ayurvedic treatments like Haritaki or Triphala without sweetener. Practitioners say tasting the combination of astringent, sour and sweet flavors, as well as mildly bitter and pungent, is beneficial in and of itself.

If you must add some sweetener, then try a drop of stevia or little raw honey. Definitely don’t use unhealthy sugar as this works against the very health benefits Haritaki is providing.
