Ayurveda refers, Tulsi (Holy Basil) as “the incomparable one,” “mother medicine of nature” and “the queen of herbs” and is revered as a sacred plant. Tulsi's life-enhancing qualities, repeatedly noted in ancient Indian scriptures dating back over 5,000 years. It is revered as an elixir of life for both its medicinal and spiritual properties.

Tulsi belongs to the mint family and has two main varieties. The greener variety is called Rama Tulsi and the greenish black variety is called Krishna Tulsi. Holy Basil, Ocimum sanctum, should not be confused with Sweet Basil, Ocimum basilicum, which is commonly used for culinary purposes.

In Hinduism, tulsi is worshipped as a goddess and every part of the tulsi plant is revered and considered sacred, including the leaves, stem, flower, root, seeds and oil. Every Hindu household has a Tulsi plant which is used as raw leaves or as a leaf tea for spiritual and religious practices.

As per Ayurveda tulsi is light to digest and dries tissue secretions. It has a pungent, bitter taste, as well as light, dry and sharp properties and a hot potency. It pacifies Vata and Kapha dosha and aggravates Pitta. Both green and dark green (greenish black ) varieties have similar properties.

  • It is a natural detoxifying herb.
  • It is antimicrobial. The tulsi plant is one of the most potent antiviral herbs of Ayurveda.
  • Tulsi has anti inflammatory properties as it reduces vata . Hence its external application on swollen parts helps to diminish swelling and pain.
  • Tulsi helps in many skin disorders. It is effective in skin rashes, insect bites and itching. Leaves of this plant are effectively used in ringworm infections and leucoderma.
  • Fresh juice of Tulsi leaves is used in nasya karma. This method helps to relieve headache and diseases of head and neck. Tulsi leaves act as nervine tonic and help to sharpen memory.
  • Paste and Juice of Tulsi leaves help to reduce acne, pimples and scars.
  • According ayurveda, preparations of Tulsi are beneficial in indigestion, intestinal parasites and constipation. Due to its Vata pacifying effect, it relieves gas accumulation and thus relieves resultant pain in the flanks.
  • Due to its Kapha and Vata balancing effect, it is useful in treatment of asthma and chronic respiratory disorders, cold and cough and also repeated hiccups.
  • It relieves vomiting.
  • Tulsi acts as a cardiac tonic and purifies blood.
  • Seeds of tulsi are effective in premature ejaculation. It also increases quantity of semen.
  • It is an adaptogenic herb and is useful in stress related disorders. Consuming 10 – 12 leaves of Tulsi per day helps to reduce stress.
  • It is useful in kidney and bladder stones.
Apart from these researches have shown that tulsi is very effective in reducing blood sugar and blood cholesterol.
Tulsi has also been used in cities to combat air pollution. Hundreds of thousands of tulsi plants have been planted around the Taj Mahal in Agra, India to help protect the iconic marble building from environmental pollution damage.

Home remedies with Tulsi

  1. Paste of tulsi leaves when applied on inflamed areas helps to reduce pain and inflammation.
  2. It is beneficial to smear crushed tulsi leaves on skin rashes, ringworm affected areas and insect bites
  3. Make a smooth paste of tulsi leaves and apply it on acne and pimple to see effective results.
  4. Fresh tulsi juice mixed with ginger and honey help to reduce cough and cold.
  5. Tulsi decoction is very beneficial in fevers like dengue and malaria.
  6. Gargling with tulsi tea or decoction helps to reduce throat pain and mouth ulcers.
  7. Regular consumption of Tulsi leaves help to control diabetes and blood cholesterol.
Tulsi Tea is highly beneficial!
An easy way to use Tulsi daily is as follows. Take 10-12 Tulsi leaves, wash them and shred them. If fresh leaves are not available, take ½ tsp of dry Tulsi leaves. Boil them in about 1 cup of water on a medium flame and reduce to half. Strain and enjoy. You may add a little ginger and clove while making this tea for extra benefit. Avoid adding milk as milk is incompatible with Tulsi according to the Ayurvedic texts.
