Drinking bed tea, first thing in the morning, is a common practice in most Indian households. Many of us are compulsive tea drinkers and love to start our day with a piping hot cup. The 'bed tea' culture can affect your health in more ways than one. "Never start your day with caffeine - be it coffee or tea. Caffeine should not be the first thing that you give your body on an empty stomach. You need to line your stomach with some solids before you take caffeine else it may trigger the stomach acids and wreck havoc with your digestion through the day.

No doubt tea makes a wonderful beverage to enjoy with a group of friends, serve as a welcome drink to guests or accompany us when we want to be left with our thoughts, but it also offers several health benefits like the antioxidants in black tea or the catechins that can boost your immunity and your metabolism. However, it is really not a good idea to kick start your morning with tea.

As per Ayurveda, it is highly recommended to wake up early every day and rush to the toilet straight away to empty your bladder (and bowels, if your digestive system is in order). This helps to kick start the digestive system and eliminate toxins that have built up overnight.

The Ayurvedic philosophy believes the first item you ingest sets the mood for the remainder of the day. So a delicious morning ritual to drink a fresh cup of Lemon, Honey, and Ginger Tea would be a good way to set the thoughts for the day. 

To make this simply grate some fresh ginger, place it in your favorite cup and cover with hot water. Squeeze in some fresh lemon. Give it a stir. Allow the tea to sit for a couple of minutes, before adding raw honey (heating honey too high means losing many of its nutrients, hence using raw honey and adding once the tea is warm, and not hot).

After drinking your tea, and allowing it a little time to move through the body, get stuck into a healthy munching of any one seasonal fruit preferably a banana or a handful of nuts to kickstart your metabolism.

Now activate your system to get moving in the morning. Before you have breakfast, be sure to fit in your yoga practice. This may be a simple self-practice morning yoga, or even simply turning your world upside down into your favorite inversion for 5 minutes. Inversions help to flush blood from the feet to the internal organs, whilst energizing your lymphatic system.

An infusion is a large amount of herb brewed for a long time. Typically, one ounce by weight (about a cup by volume) of dried herb is placed in a quart jar which is then filled to the top with boiling water, tightly lidded and allowed to steep for 4-10 hours. After straining, a cup or more is consumed, and the remainder chilled to slow spoilage. Drinking 2-4 cups a day is usual. Since the minerals and other phytochemicals in nourishing herbs are made more accessible by drying, dried herbs are considered best for infusions.

In the morning, strain the plant material out, squeezing it well, and drink the liquid. Drink the infusion within 36 hours or until it spoils. Then use it to water your houseplants, or pour it over your hair after washing as a final rinse which can be left on.
