Ayurveda for Psoriasis Treatment


Ayurveda is the best psoriasis treatment! It is an ancient medical practice that people sometimes use to try to help their psoriasis. It involves incorporating a special diet, herbal compounds, and additional supportive medical practices.


Psoriasis is a non-contagious common skin condition that causes rapid skin cell reproduction resulting in red, dry patches of thickened skin. The dry flakes and skin scales are thought to result from the rapid buildup of skin cells. Psoriasis commonly affects the skin of the elbows, knees, and scalp.

Causes of Psoriasis

Psoriasis can be caused by a variety of reasons. Heredity can be crucial. If one parent is affected, then there is 15% of chances for the child to suffer from psoriasis. If both the parents are affected then the possibility of child getting the psoriasis is 60%. Consumption of opposite foods (such as fish and milk together), trauma on skin like cuts, bruises or burns, some medicines or skin irritants, excessive smoking, alcohol consumption and mental stress or psychological trauma can also be responsible for causing it.

 Ayurveda for Psoriasis Treatment 

According to Ayurveda, Psoriasis appears due to imbalance of two doshas - Vata and Kapha . Vata and Kapha doshas manifest in the skin and cause accumulation of toxins. These toxins accumulate in deep tissues like rasa (nutrient plasma), rakta (blood), mansa (muscles), and lasika (lymphatic). These toxins cause contamination of deeper tissues, leading to Psoriasis.

Purification of blood and tissues is the primary aim of Ayurvedic treatment in cases of Psoriasis. Toxins are cleansed from the body and the digestion restored to prevent further accumulation. Nourishing herbs are then administered to strengthen and tone the tissues to promote complete healing of the skin.

Meditation and movement

Ayurveda practitioners emphasize a balance of three elements, which they define as:
  • a person's universe
  • the body's constitution (known as the "prakriti")
  • the body's life forces (known as "dosha")
One of the ways a person may keep these in balance is through taking steps to reduce stress and calm anxiety.

Meditation and the practice of "Pranayama," a method of controlled breathing techniques, may benefit a person in reducing their psoriasis.
Diet & Lifestyle Advice
  • Avoid consuming opposite foods. 
  • Do not control natural urges like vomiting, urination, bowels, etc. 
  • Do not take cold water bath immediately after a heavy workout, traveling, a long walk, etc. 
  • Take care not to consume foods which cause indigestion. 
  • Absolutely do not eat too much of salty, sour or acidic foods. 
  • Avoid sleeping in afternoons. 
  • Say no to radish, sesame, jaggery (gur), curds, fish and other sour foods.
  • Foods to avoid include those that contain an excess of carbohydrates and products that contain lots of sugar.

Ayurveda Home Remedies for Psoriasis

  • Cover the affected part with a fresh thin banana leaf.
  • Take 15-20 sesame seeds and soak in a glass of water. Keep it overnight and drink on an empty stomach early in the morning.
  • Take 1-2 cup of bitter gourd juice on empty stomach in the morning. Continue this for 5-6 months. Patient may add a tablespoon of lime juice, if they find it difficult to digest the bitter taste.
  • Turmeric, as well as there are many other Ayurvedic herbs available, and several could potentially benefit people with psoriasis. Additional Ayurvedic herbs that may be used to treat psoriasis include:
    • aloe vera - Gel from the aloe plant can be applied to the skin up to three times a day. Look for aloe vera creams containing 0.5% aloe. No benefit has been shown from taking aloe in tablet form and it can be dangerous.
    • black nightshade
    • boswellia (frankincense)
    • garlic
    • guggal
    • jasmine flower paste
    • neem
  • Applying natural soothing oils, such as coconut or olive oils may help to soften the skin and relieve itching and discomfort associated with psoriasis.
  • Apple Cider Vinegar - may help relieve scalp itch from psoriasis. You can buy a bottle of organic apple cider vinegar and apply it to your scalp several times a week. Some people report diluting vinegar with water on a 1-to-1 ratio helps prevent a burning sensation. Others say they need to rinse the skin once the solution has dried to prevent irritation. Skip this cheap remedy if your scalp skin is cracked or bleeding. If you have open wounds, vinegar will only irritate your skin and cause a burning sensation. If it works for you, you should see results within a few weeks.
  • Dead Sea Salts - Adding Dead Sea salts or Epsom salts to your warm (not hot) bath water and soaking in the tub for about 15 minutes may help remove scales and ease itching. Be sure to apply moisturizer to your skin as soon as you get out of the tub. You may see some improvement. 
While Ayurveda may be able to treat psoriasis in some people, its results haven't been studied in large-scale clinical trials or systematic research reviews. It is these types of research studies that are needed to prove that Ayurvedic treatments are effective. However, until there is more scientific evidence, it is always a good idea for a person with psoriasis to check with their doctor before using any Ayurvedic treatments.
