Ayurvedic Home Remedies for Gall Bladder Disorder

In Ayurveda it is known as PRATISHYAYA mainly due to vitiation of DOSHAS (Vata, Pitta & Kapha).

The gallbladder is a small pear-shaped organ that averages three to six inches in length. It lies underneath the liver in the upper right side of the abdomen. It is connected to the liver and small intestine by small tubes called bile ducts. Bile, a greenish-brown fluid, is utilized by the body to digest fatty foods and assists in the absorption of certain vitamins and minerals. The gallbladder serves as a reservoir for bile. Between meals, bile accumulates and is concentrated within this organ. During meals, the gallbladder contracts and empties bile into the intestine to assist in digestion.

There are two major types of gallstones: 
  • Cholesterol gallstones are composed mainly of cholesterol which is made in the liver.
  • Pigment gallstones are composed of calcium salts, bilirubin and other material.

Causes for Gall stone :
Approximately 80% of all gallstones are completely asymptomatic and "silent." The chance that a "silent" gallstone will become symptomatic is 2% for each year.
  • People who are overweight
  • Older persons
  • Pregnant women
  • Women who use hormone contraceptives and post-menopausal hormones
  • Persons with a family history of gallstones
  • Persons of American Indian ancestry
  • Persons with diseases of the small intestine
  • Persons who have recently lost weight.

Symptoms of gallstone disease:
Symptoms of gallbladder disease occur when gallstones irritate the gallbladder. The most common symptoms associated with gallstone disease include: 
  • Severe and intermittent pain in the right upper abdomen. This pain can also spread to the chest, shoulders or back. Sometimes this pain may be mistaken for a heart attack.
  • Chronic indigestion and nausea.
  • If the stones are very large and has been persisting since long, then there is no solution other than the surgery.
  • In the initial stage, a patient can fast for two to three days. This gives temporarily relief.
  • For initial days, it is best if patient can be only on water.

Dietary Considerations
As soon as gallbladder stones are detected, they should be treated by adopting certain home remedies. Adopting a right diet for gallbladder stones and avoiding certain food habits can lead to home treatment for gallbladder stones without going for gallbladder stones surgery. 
  • Adopt the perfect gallbladder diet, that is high fiber-low fat diet. Low fat food will reduce the amount of cholesterol going into gallbladder and high fiber food will relieve you from constipation avoiding any formation of gallbladder stones.
  • Exercise regularly to help keep your bowel movement smooth. Reduce weight by natural ways to avoid gallbladder stones and many other health risks.
  • Drink fresh juice of beets, carrot and cucumber twice a day. They help in gallbladder cleanse. Eat pear or drink its juice for cleansing gallbladder. Also take carrots, beets, grapefruit, lemons or grapes raw or in form of juice.
  • Take about 125 ml each of the juices of dandelion and watercress twice a day.
  • Take plain yoghurt, cottage cheese, and a tablespoon of olive oil twice a day. The best way is to include them into your diet.
  • Avoid high fat foods like meat, eggs, animal fats, processed foods, fried and greasy foods, refined carbohydrates, alcohol, sugar as well as spices, condiments, and pickles.
  • Eat frequent small meals rather than 2 or 3 large meals during the day.
  • Drink apple juice for two days before going to bed. On the second night mix 3 ounces of fresh squeezed lemon and three ounces of dark olive oil and drink. If your gallbladder stones are very small, they will dissolve and pass out on the third day.
  • For gallbladder pain, drink 1 tablespoon of apple cider vinegar in a glass of apple juice for quick relief from pain. If the pain does not subside, get treatment for other disorders like gastroesophogeal reflux disease or heart problems.
  • To increases bile production, add dandelion and milk thistle in your morning tea. Other herbs such as chamomile, marshmallow, and slippery elm can also be added to decrease gallbladder inflammation.
  • Rosemary and wild yam are antispasmodic herbs that increase bile flow and lessen gallbladder pain.
  • It is advisable to be lacto-vegetarian. Give up non-vegetarian diet and poultry till you become alright.
  • The olive oil alone is good a home remedy for gall bladder stones. The oil serves as stimulant for production of bile and lipase. These help in the digestion in fat enzymes.
  • The diet should exclude refined carbohydrates. Carbohydrates in terms of sugar and sugar products, alcohol, soft drinks, cakes etc are to be avoided.
  • Ice creams, coffee, tea and citrus food are to be restricted.
  • Another homemade remedy is consuming flowers, seeds and roots of chicory or endive plant. This carries valuable benefits for gall bladder stones. For this, one can go for 30-50 ml of decoction of seeds, flowers or roots and can have thrice a day. It is believed that, this juice promotes the secretion of bile and hence, god for liver and gall bladder both. This is one of the best home remedies for gall bladder.
  •  Anise seeds are said to be good for dissolving the gall bladder stones.
  • Alfalfa is another proven home remedy for gall bladder stones. This is high in nutrients and hence also provides energy to the body.
  • Some believe that warm water enema will improve the condition of gall bladder stones. This will also improve the digestion and clearing the track of the intestines.
  • Barberry is considered to be good for gall bladder. It not only helps in dissolving the stones but also removes toxins from the bodily organs. This is also oneof the good home remedies for gall bladder.

Ayurvedic Herbs to treat Gallbladder Stones
Some Ayurvedic herbs like ‘Paashanbheda’, Gokshura, Punarnavadi,Chicory, Dandelion, Olive, Sunflower Oil have been used to treat any kind of stones in the body. There are also ayurvedic supplements in the market like Gokshuradi Guggulu, Liverole, Arogyavardhini Bati .

Other Simple Measures
The pain of gallstone colic can be relieved by application of hot packs or fomentation to the upper abdominal area. A warm water enema at body temperature will help eliminate faucal accumulations if the patient is constipated. Physical exercise is also essential. Surgery becomes necessary if the gallstones are very large or in cases where they have been present for long.
